Bradley Barcola to Liverpool: Ongoing Transfer Saga
Fabrizio Romano is doubling down. Bradley Barcola to Liverpool, in his view, is not a fading rumour but a live, developing saga.
Liverpool, fresh from bringing in Ronald Araujo, Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz, have turned their full attention to Barcola as they search for a new elite winger in the wake of Mohamed Salah’s departure. The PSG wide man, under contract until 2028 but reportedly unwilling to extend, is understood to be very keen on a move to Anfield, and talks over a fee have been ongoing.
Reports on Friday suggested the Premier League club had decided to pause negotiations, citing two unnamed reasons. Romano has pushed back hard against that version of events.
On his YouTube channel, the transfer specialist made it clear he still expects movement.
“What does it (the Torres and Godts arrivals) mean? That there is an expectation there could be movements around the situation of Bradley Barcola,” he said, linking PSG’s business to the Frenchman’s future.
For Romano, the Liverpool-Barcola line has never gone cold.
“Because the situation of Barcola remains absolutely linked to Liverpool. I never stopped telling you and I remain absolutely all in on this story, because Liverpool want Barcola.
“Liverpool are negotiating for Barcola, and because I was believing in this news already in April, May, when the story and the narrative around was that Barcola was untouchable. But I remain on this story again today.
“Liverpool are still trying for Barcola. There’s still a gap in financial valuation between what PSG want and what Liverpool offer, but they’re still working for Barcola.
“The financial agreement with the player is okay, and now Liverpool and PSG keep talking, exchanging messages and discussing for Barcola.
The deal is alive.”
PSG’s stance remains firm: they want around £145m for the winger. Liverpool, as things stand, are pushing for a compromise somewhere in the middle. With personal terms effectively in place, the standoff is purely between the clubs.
While the recruitment team wrestles with numbers, the football side faces a different kind of headache.
Carragher sounds the alarm over midfield
Jamie Carragher, never shy about dissecting his old club, believes Liverpool are walking into the new season with a glaring structural issue.
“The midfield for me is still a huge problem for Liverpool,” he said on The Overlap Fan Debate.
He has seen enough in pre-season to worry him.
“I haven’t watched all the pre-season games, but I watched the last two against decent opposition – it was Leeds and then Monaco.
“And the problem Liverpool had last season was there was space everywhere in midfield. That has not gone away at all.”
Carragher fears the tweak in roles might stretch that area even more.
“That’s only going to get bigger with the deployment of [Dominik] Szoboszlai in midfield.
“It looks like they’re going to play him, rather than as a number 10, almost as a central midfield player alongside [Ryan] Gravenberch and that is just pure box-to-box.”
So Liverpool push hard for Barcola at the top end of the pitch, while a club legend warns that the heart of the team remains exposed. If the deal for the PSG winger does get done, the next question will be unavoidable: can a new star out wide really shine if the middle of the pitch still looks wide open?
