Breel Embolo Cleared for World Cup Travel with Switzerland
Breel Embolo will finally join up with Switzerland’s World Cup squad in the United States after a late visa green light ended an anxious wait for one of Murat Yakin’s most important forwards.
The Swiss football federation confirmed on Thursday that the 29-year-old has been cleared to travel and is expected to land in San Diego on Friday evening, several days after the rest of the squad flew out to their pre-tournament base in California.
From boarding gate to back office
Embolo had been due to travel with his team-mates on Tuesday, only for his ESTA travel authorisation to be pulled for further review shortly before departure. While the squad boarded their flight, he stayed behind in Switzerland, watching preparations for the World Cup begin without him.
The uncertainty dragged on for days. Training sessions in California went ahead; Embolo remained in limbo.
The federation finally drew a line under the saga on Thursday, confirming that the issue was resolved and that the striker had been granted permission to enter the U.S.
“We have just been informed that Breel Embolo’s visa has been approved. He will therefore be able to travel to the United States. He is expected to join the team on Friday evening,” read a statement from the Swiss FA.
Old cases, new questions
The delay came after American authorities requested additional checks and documentation. Embolo attended an appointment at the U.S. Embassy in Bern on Wednesday, where officials reviewed files linked to a legal case stemming from a 2018 altercation in Basel.
U.S. authorities also asked for court records related to a 2023 conviction for making multiple threats, which led to a suspended fine and became legally binding earlier this year. Although that case had already gone through the courts and been settled, it triggered extra scrutiny under U.S. entry rules.
Only once those documents had been examined and the questions satisfied did the visa come through.
For Switzerland, it means one thing above all: a key attacking option will now be on the training pitch in San Diego, not stuck in an embassy waiting room.
