Bruno Fernandes' Contract Situation at Manchester United

Michael Carrick is refusing to be drawn into contract talk, but his message around Bruno Fernandes is loud enough: Manchester United’s head coach wants his captain at the heart of everything this season.

Fernandes, now 31, has entered the final year of his current deal. United hold an option to extend it by another 12 months, yet the midfielder’s £57m release clause hangs over the situation and has not gone unnoticed across Europe. Juventus and AC Milan are weighing up a move, while Galatasaray are also considering whether to test United’s resolve.

Ideally, United would tie their skipper down to fresh terms. For now, there has been no real movement on a new contract, no breakthrough that would silence the speculation.

Carrick, speaking in Maynooth on Thursday, chose not to wade into the negotiations or the noise around them. He sidestepped the politics, but not the importance of the player.

“Listen, we want top players,” he said. “Every good team has players that have made a major impact. That’s how it is. Bruno has had that for a period of time here. We want to keep pushing and want to get the best out of Bruno and the team around him.”

The reliance is not just about goals, assists or the familiar arms-flung-wide body language in the final third. Inside the dressing room, Fernandes has become one of the pillars of the club’s structure, a captain whose influence stretches well beyond matchday.

Carrick has seen that side up close since returning to the club. What has struck him is the way Fernandes invests in those around him, especially the next generation.

“He’s been so positive since I came back,” Carrick said. “As much as the performances, it’s how he has been around the group, how he leads and takes time to help others, especially the younger players. That comes into play. He’s in a really good place and looking forward to the season.”

So the picture is clear, even if the contract situation is not. Europe’s heavyweights are circling, the clause is there to be triggered, and talks over a new deal have yet to catch fire.

Carrick, though, is planning for a campaign with Bruno Fernandes driving his team, on the pitch and in the dressing room, as United weigh up just how much they can afford to risk losing their captain.
