Burnley Sign Highly Rated Defender Alleyne for Promotion Push

Burnley have moved to sharpen their promotion push by bringing in highly rated 21-year-old defender Alleyne, who arrives after a split season between Watford and Manchester City.

The England Under-21 international spent the first half of the 2025-26 campaign on loan at Watford in the Championship, where he quickly carved out a reputation for aggressive, front-foot defending. In league matches for the Hornets, he registered the second-most tackles (20) among the club’s defenders, won the third-most duels (72) and produced the fourth-most clearances (76) – numbers that underline why he caught the eye of recruiters higher up the ladder.

City recalled him midway through the season as injuries bit into Pep Guardiola’s squad. The youngster did not just make up the numbers. He featured seven times under Guardiola, including both legs of the EFL Cup semi-final against Newcastle United and a Champions League outing against Bodo/Glimt, valuable experience at the sharp end of elite competition.

Now comes a different kind of pressure. Burnley are rebuilding after relegation from the Premier League and need players who can handle both the physical grind of the Championship and the expectation that comes with being one of the division’s heavyweights. Alleyne fits that profile: energetic, defensively reliable, and already blooded at the top level.

He sounded like a player itching to get started.

"I'm super excited, I can't wait to get going," he told the club’s website after completing the move. "I had my first training session today and I've really enjoyed it so far, meeting the manager and my teammates.

"I first heard of the interest a couple of months ago now and I'm so glad it got done. It's a huge team, a Premier League team to be honest and I'm so buzzing to be here."

Burnley want straight passage back to the top flight. Alleyne has come to prove he belongs there too.
