Cabrera Suspension Hits Espanyol Ahead of Real Madrid Clash

Espanyol’s preparations for Real Madrid have been hit hard. Their defensive leader, Leandro Cabrera, will not be on the pitch when Los Blancos visit next Saturday.

The Uruguayan centre-back has started serving a three-match suspension carried over from last season, a punishment that stems from an incident against Getafe. According to the referee’s report from that game, Cabrera struck the VAR monitor at the end of the match, an outburst that earned him the lengthy ban.

Espanyol pushed the case as far as they could. The club appealed right up to the final moments in an effort to delay the sanction, hoping to keep their main organiser at the back available for these early-season fixtures. The attempt failed. The suspension stood.

The first visible consequence came against Levante. Cabrera’s name appeared on the morning squad list, only for him to disappear from the starting eleven minutes before kick-off. With no injury reported, the late change raised eyebrows and fuelled confusion around the stadium.

Once the appeal was finally exhausted, the picture became clear. Cabrera missed the Levante match, in which Espanyol claimed their first La Liga win of the season, and, unless there is an unexpected twist, he will also sit out the meeting with Real Madrid.

Manolo turned to Riedel alongside Unai Nunez at the heart of the defence against Levante. The makeshift pairing responded with a composed display, helped by the fact Levante’s forwards rarely threatened Dmitrovic’s goal. It was a clean sheet built in relatively calm waters.

Now comes the storm.

Real Madrid arrive with an attack led by Kylian Mbappe and an array of options capable of punishing the slightest lapse. Against that kind of firepower, Cabrera’s absence grows from inconvenience to major problem. He is one of the most seasoned figures in Espanyol’s back line, a defender who has gone toe-to-toe with Spain’s elite on countless occasions.

Espanyol proved against Levante that they can hold firm when the pressure is modest. Against Mbappe and company, they must do it without their most experienced enforcer.
