Carrick’s New Era Begins with Hull Clash

Michael Carrick steps into his first full Premier League season as permanent Manchester United manager on Saturday lunchtime, and there is no gentle easing-in. A promoted Hull City, a TV slot, and a fanbase expecting a statement. This is the job now.

United arrive from a third-place finish and a return to the Champions League after three years away. That achievement bought Carrick credit. It also raised the stakes. Balancing Europe and a title push is the standard at Old Trafford; anything less feels like drift.

A trip to newly promoted opposition is the sort of fixture United are expected to handle. It is also the sort they have occasionally made hard work of. Carrick will know the tone of the season can be set in these early weeks, long before the Champions League anthem returns.

Injuries shape Carrick’s first call

Carrick’s plans are already being tested.

  • Matthijs de Ligt remains out with a lower back issue, depriving United of their marquee defensive organiser.
  • Manuel Ugarte, signed to add bite and control in midfield, is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a knee injury.
  • Tom Heaton is also unavailable.

Mason Mount’s situation lingers in the background. He picked up a foot injury in the 1–1 pre-season draw with PSG and faces a late fitness test. Even if he makes the squad, United are unlikely to gamble heavily on him in August.

Benjamin Seško has at least returned to full training after a shin problem, but his chances of featuring from the start look slim. His availability, or lack of it, has a direct impact on the shape of United’s attack.

New midfield, new heartbeat

The real intrigue lies in the middle of the pitch.

Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos are both poised to make their competitive debuts in a remodelled central midfield. It is a bold move from Carrick, and a clear sign of where he believes this United side must evolve.

Santos, a £50m arrival from Chelsea, has barely missed a beat since walking through the door. He featured in all six of United’s pre-season friendlies and looked comfortable dictating tempo and snapping into challenges. Carrick appears ready to hand him the keys from day one.

Tielemans arrived later after helping Belgium reach the World Cup quarter-finals, but he quickly caught up. He completed 90 minutes in the final pre-season outing against AC Milan and brings a blend of passing range and Premier League know-how that should complement Santos’ energy.

If this partnership clicks, United suddenly have a different profile at the base of midfield: more progressive passing, more control, more authority.

Defensive reshuffle at the back

At centre-back, Carrick turns to a new pairing.

Ayden Heaven is set to partner Harry Maguire, with Lisandro Martínez short of minutes after managing only around half an hour of pre-season football. Martínez is expected to start among the substitutes, joined by Kobbie Mainoo as another high-quality option from the bench.

Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw continue in the full-back roles, offering width and an outlet in possession. Their understanding with the new-look midfield will be crucial, especially against a Hull side likely to attack with the energy of a promoted team smelling an early scalp.

Lammens trusted as last line

In goal, Senne Lammens keeps his place.

The Belgian has been trusted throughout pre-season and now carries that responsibility into the Premier League opener. Behind a reshaped defence, his composure with the ball and command of the box will come under immediate scrutiny.

Bruno at the centre of it all

Up front, the picture is shaped by Seško’s uncertain fitness.

Bryan Mbeumo is expected to lead the line after an impressive pre-season, taking advantage of the gap left by the new striker’s delayed involvement. His movement and work rate give United a different kind of focal point, one that drags defenders wide and opens lanes for runners.

Either side of captain Bruno Fernandes, Carrick turns to Amad Diallo and Matheus Cunha for width and incision. Diallo’s sharpness and ability to attack his full-back offer a direct threat, while Cunha brings drive and unpredictability cutting in from the opposite flank.

Bruno, as ever, operates in his familiar No.10 role. He remains the creative axis, the one tasked with threading passes into Mbeumo, releasing the wingers early, and setting the attacking tone. United still go as he goes.

Predicted Manchester United XI

Carrick is expected to stick with a 4-2-3-1:

Senne Lammens; Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Ayden Heaven, Luke Shaw; Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos; Amad Diallo, Bruno Fernandes, Matheus Cunha; Bryan Mbeumo.

Stage, spotlight, expectations

The curtain-raiser kicks off at 12:30 BST on Saturday, 22 August 2026, with live coverage on TNT Sports 1, TNT Sports Ultimate and HBO Max in the UK.

For Hull, it is a shot at an early shock. For Carrick, it is something else entirely: the first real test of whether last season’s progress was a platform, or just a pause before the next upheaval.
