Charlton Athletic Triumph Over Derby County with Tyreece Campbell's Winner
Tyreece Campbell lashed home a superb second-half winner as Charlton Athletic roared back from a goal down to sink Derby County and bank a sixth opening-day league victory in eight seasons.
The winger, electric all afternoon, shifted the ball on to his left and drilled a low shot into the far right corner, sealing a bruising trip to London for the Rams at the end of a turbulent week off the pitch.
Derby strike first after troubled build-up
Derby arrived with the noise of an aborted takeover by Saudi Arabia government official Turki Al-Sheikh still echoing around the club. Optimism had been checked, questions were being asked. On the pitch, though, John Eustace’s side initially looked determined to shut all that out.
They dug in, scrapped for territory and, when the chance came, showed real quality.
Sammie Szmodics, bright and busy between the lines, produced a crisp finish to give the visitors the lead before the break. It came after neat interplay with Morris, moments after Szmodics had already gone close with another effort. Clinical. Exactly what Derby needed.
Charlton, who had started at pace without truly carving Derby open, suddenly had work to do.

The response after half-time was emphatic. The Valley felt it, Derby felt it. The red shirts pushed higher, tackles snapped in, and the Rams began to creak.
Campbell drove Charlton on, tormenting defenders and whipping in a stream of dangerous crosses. One of them almost brought the equaliser when Dan McNamara met a dropping ball with a fierce half-volley, only for Charlie Taylor to throw himself in the way with a superb block.
The pressure kept rising. From a corner, Timothy Ouma found himself completely free but glanced his header wide, a glaring miss that drew groans from the home support.
Charlton did not let it derail them. The next big delivery proved decisive.
Karlan Grant, with a touch of class on the left, bent in an exquisite cross and Lloyd Jones attacked it with conviction, thumping his header in from close range. Derby’s resistance finally cracked, and The Valley erupted.

With the game level, Campbell sensed his moment.
Already the outstanding player on the pitch, he picked up possession, worked the ball onto his favoured left and unleashed a precise, skidding drive into the right corner. No fuss, no backlift drama, just a ruthless finish that left Derby staring at another opening-day defeat.
For the Rams, it was a familiar, bitter feeling: four successive losses on the first day of a league season. For Charlton, it was the latest chapter in a strong recent history of fast starts.
Derby threw what they had left at the closing stages. Oscar Fraulo forced a sharp save from Will Mannion, who stood firm again in stoppage time to deny Morris and protect the points.
Charlton held out, Campbell rightly taking the acclaim as matchwinner, while Derby were left to digest not only a damaging week off the pitch, but a harsh reminder that the season on it can be just as unforgiving.
