Chelsea’s Investment in Ahanor as Palace Secures Loan Deal

Chelsea’s deal for teenage defender Ahanor will not bring him straight to Stamford Bridge – but it still underlines how heavily the club are investing in his future.

The 18-year-old, who Standard Sport revealed last week had agreed personal terms with Chelsea and been cleared to travel to London for a medical, is instead heading across the capital to Crystal Palace on loan.

The twist is in the paperwork. Ahanor will officially join Palace on loan from Atalanta, with Chelsea to take him permanently in the summer of 2027. It is a staggered move that keeps the defender playing regular top-flight football in England while his long-term destination is already mapped out.

There is a regulatory wrinkle behind it. Chelsea have already sent one player to Selhurst Park this summer, with Axel Disasi joining Palace on a season-long loan that carries no option or obligation to buy. With that route already used, Ahanor’s immediate switch is being routed via Atalanta before his delayed arrival in west London.

For Palace, it is a significant coup. Ahanor comes through the Genoa academy system and has already stepped onto the international stage, with two senior caps for Italy after making his debut earlier this year. At club level he has been trusted at the sharp end too, racking up 28 Serie A appearances for Atalanta last season and making his Champions League bow in September.

Chelsea, though, are not slowing down in midfield either.

The club remain keen on Monaco’s 22-year-old midfielder Lamine Camara and are actively exploring a move, with the situation around Enzo Fernandez growing increasingly tense. Fernandez has now missed back-to-back Chelsea matches amid strong interest from Manchester City, and his absence is being watched closely across Europe.

After the chaotic 4-3 win over Brighton at the weekend, head coach Xabi Alonso was asked to explain why the Argentina international was again nowhere to be seen.

"We assess what's best for the team and considering everything, the situation, we need a team that is focused, with everyone involved that's fully committed and engaged with the game," Alonso said.

Ahanor heading to Palace, Camara on the radar, Fernandez’s future in question – Chelsea’s rebuild is gathering pace, but the shape of their next great side is still being drawn in pencil, not ink.
