Even though Monaco abandoned the written deal, Chelsea did not reverse their own commitment to selling Fernandez to City for £125 million. They honored their contract, showing good faith despite losing their intended replacement.

Monaco apparently backed off because they believed Camara could fetch a €70 million fee later. This confidence grew following interest from Liverpool, although Liverpool did not directly disrupt Chelsea’s negotiations.

Midfield Woes Deepen for Xabi Alonso

Xabi Alonso faces a tough challenge at Stamford Bridge. Selling Fernandez without securing a replacement has thinned Chelsea’s midfield badly. Earlier attempts to sign Manu Kone were blocked by Roma’s coach Gian Piero Gasperini. The shortage became clear during Chelsea’s 4-3 win over Brighton when Moises Caicedo got injured after coming on as a substitute, joining Jordan Henderson on the sidelines.
