Chelsea Faces Injury Crisis Ahead of Liverpool Clash
Chelsea head to Anfield stripped of wingers, short of their first-choice goalkeeper and with a patched-up squad that looks nothing like the one they imagined for this stage of the season.
Robert Sanchez has been ruled out after the head injury he suffered in Monday’s 3-1 home defeat to Nottingham Forest, while Pedro Neto and Alejandro Garnacho are also “looking unlikely” to feature against Liverpool, according to McFarlane. Academy prospect Jesse Derry, who also suffered a serious head clash against Forest, will not play again this season.
It leaves Chelsea walking into one of the most unforgiving arenas in English football without a single fit, natural winger.
Sanchez out after brutal head clash
Sanchez collided head-on with Morgan Gibbs-White in the second half at Stamford Bridge, a sickening impact that left the goalkeeper needing lengthy treatment before he was withdrawn. Filip Jorgensen came on in his place.
The change was not officially recorded as a concussion substitution, but the damage was clear. Sanchez later posted a photo showing a deep cut to his head, stitched and swollen, and has spent the week under concussion protocol with Chelsea’s medical team.
“Rob [Sanchez] is also not going to be available after the injury that he sustained in the Nottingham Forest game,” McFarlane confirmed.
With Sanchez sidelined, Jorgensen is in line to start at Anfield, stepping into one of the most scrutinised roles in the Premier League under the glare of Liverpool’s press.
Winger crisis deepens
If the goalkeeping situation is concerning, the wide areas are a full-blown emergency.
“Neto and Garnacho are carrying knocks, so it’s looking unlikely that they are going to be available [against Liverpool],” McFarlane said, confirming what Chelsea feared after the Forest defeat.
Derry, who was stretchered off and taken to hospital after his own head clash in that match, has already been ruled out for the rest of the campaign. Estevao and Jamie Gittens are also sidelined.
That wipes out McFarlane’s entire senior and academy wing options in one sweep.
The likely solution is a tactical reshuffle rather than a like-for-like replacement. Joao Pedro is expected to be pushed into an auxiliary role on the left, tasked with offering width and ball retention rather than playing as an orthodox touchline winger. Enzo Fernandez should operate in the central attacking midfield slot, with Cole Palmer shifted to the right.
Liam Delap, who offers physical presence and constant running, is a strong candidate to lead the line. At Anfield, his ability to pin centre-backs and relieve pressure could prove crucial.
James and Colwill offer rare good news
Amid the injury chaos, there is at least a glimmer of positivity.
Reece James, the club captain, is edging towards a first start after six weeks out with a hamstring injury. He returned to the bench against Forest and is now in contention to feature from the off on Merseyside.
Malo Gusto endured a torrid afternoon on Monday and may make way if James is deemed ready to start at right-back. The question for McFarlane is simple: risk his captain from the start in one of the most intense fixtures of the season, or hold him back and potentially weaken his side’s structure down the right?
Levi Colwill is also pushing hard. The defender missed the entire campaign up to this week after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury during Chelsea’s first pre-season training session. He finally made his return as a substitute against Forest and is now eyeing a place in the starting XI.
His comeback offers Chelsea another reliable option at the back, and his composure on the ball could be vital against Liverpool’s relentless pressing.
Chelsea arrive at Anfield bruised, short-handed and forced into improvisation. The question now is whether this patched-together side can withstand the noise, the tempo and the fury that await them on Saturday.
