Chelsea Eye Late Move for Marcus Rashford
Chelsea are weighing up a late, eye-catching move for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford as the transfer window ticks into its final days, according to reports.
After a summer of heavy spending that has already reshaped Xabi Alonso’s squad, Stamford Bridge chiefs are still not done. They have smashed through the £300m barrier on recruits, with Morgan Rogers arriving as the most expensive British player in history and major outlays also going on Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra and Valentin Barco. Experience has been added too, with former England stalwarts Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson brought in to steady the dressing room.
Alonso’s new-look Chelsea started the Premier League season with a breathless 3-2 win over Fulham on Monday night, a chaotic, attacking performance that underlined both their promise and their need for refinement. The club’s hierarchy now want to trim the squad and balance the books.
Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap are both expected to be sold, while Chelsea are open to offers for Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto. Enzo Fernandez remains on Manchester City’s radar, but Chelsea have drawn a hard line there: the Argentine will only be allowed to leave for a fee in the region of £120m.
Even as they push players towards the exit, Chelsea are keeping one eye on a final attacking reinforcement. Club sources are said to be “open” to adding a versatile forward before the window shuts next week. That is where Rashford comes into focus.
The Independent report that Chelsea are considering a late move for the England international, who spent last season on loan at Barcelona. Rashford had hoped to turn that spell at the Nou Camp into a permanent switch, only to be sent back to Old Trafford when no agreement was reached.
United, for their part, were initially thought to be ready to cash in on the 28-year-old. Then Michael Carrick appeared to slam the door on an exit. Speaking to ITV1 in pre-season, the United manager made it clear he still sees a role for the forward.
“He’s our player, you know, and he’s come back great. He’s just like any other player,” Carrick said. “I’ve known Marcus a long time and, you know, he gives us something a little bit different. And he’s been in great spirits since he’s been back.
“He’s been back two or three days training and it’s just pretty normal, to be honest. And we’re looking forward to the start of the season.”
Rashford came off the bench at half-time in United’s opening league game at Hull City on Saturday, but he could not prevent a dismal 2-0 defeat that has already piled pressure on Carrick. It was a familiar scene: Rashford, the local hero who has made more than 400 appearances for his boyhood club over the last decade, trying to change a game that had slipped away.
The question now is whether that long association is heading for its final act.
One former Chelsea player believes the London club should pounce. Andy Townsend, speaking to CasinoHawks, argued that Rashford would represent a clear upgrade for Alonso’s attack, especially after Chelsea allowed Alejandro Garnacho to join Aston Villa on loan.
“I think Marcus Rashford improves Chelsea’s squad, he is an improvement on Alejandro Garnacho, that’s for sure,” Townsend said. He referenced a potential fee of around £35m and admitted he was stunned no club had already moved at that price.
“I’m very surprised that no one has come to get him for that money, even if he’s 28,” he added. “Wide strikers are asked to produce a lot of output nowadays, and there aren’t many operating in the top flight at thirty-two or thirty-three. So these next couple of years for Marcus are big. It has to be the right move.”
The stumbling block is obvious: wages. Rashford is on a huge contract at United.
“He’s on massive wages, which is an issue for any club, but you’d think he could get that to a level everyone finds acceptable. A club like Chelsea might suit him,” Townsend said. “I could see that. I like Pedro Neto, but he sometimes flatters to deceive. Garnacho is far too inconsistent, like Jadon Sancho, those sorts of players are difficult to accommodate.
“Rashford showed at Barcelona that he can play at a big club, he understands that mentality.
“At £35m, I’d be surprised if a deal doesn’t get done, depending on his salary demands. If he wants to stick on £300,000-a-week, then he’s going to have a problem.
“But there’s no point in going back to Manchester United and not playing at his age. That doesn’t send a great image to potential suitors if he’s happy to just sit on the bench.
“Marcus and his team should be working around the clock to find the right environment for him at the right level, wage-wise. You want to play.
“At nearly 29, he’s in his peak, and he needs to be out there more often than not.”
Chelsea have already shown this summer that they are willing to be ruthless, creative and aggressive in the market. United, bruised by an opening-day defeat and wrestling with their own rebuild, must now decide: cash in on a player entering his prime, or trust that Rashford can still be part of the solution at Old Trafford?
