Chelsea’s midfield rebuild is taking shape, but not quite in the way many expected.

Roma have moved quickly to shut down talk of Manu Kone leaving the Stadio Olimpico, insisting no formal offer has arrived from Chelsea for the midfielder. The Serie A club made their stance clear on Monday night, with manager Gian Piero Gasperini effectively putting up a “not for sale” sign and blocking any immediate prospect of a deal.

Chelsea’s interest in Kone is real, but their first concrete move has gone elsewhere.

The Blues have lodged a £38.5m bid with Monaco for midfielder Lamine Camara as they accelerate plans for life after Enzo Fernandez. The offer marks a decisive step in a late-window reshuffle at Stamford Bridge, with the club targeting Camara as a key piece in a retooled engine room.

All of it is tied to one looming departure.

Fernandez is closing in on a move to Manchester City for a fee of about £120m, with the deal expected to be completed before the transfer deadline. Chelsea are prepared to cash in, but only on one condition: a replacement must be secured first.

That caveat has put Monaco and Camara at the centre of Chelsea’s deadline strategy. Talks between the clubs are set to continue, the clock ticking, the numbers rising, as the London side try to lock in their next midfield anchor before they let their current one walk into the champions’ dressing room.
