Chelsea’s midfield rebuild is beginning to take shape – and it could be the key that finally unlocks Enzo Fernandez’s record-breaking move to Manchester City.
Chelsea push hard for Manu Kone
Chelsea have reached an agreement on personal terms with Manu Kone and are now driving to get a deal over the line with Roma before the window shuts, according to multiple reports.
FootballTransfers first claimed Chelsea had settled terms with the 25-year-old and were now actively working on a transfer with Roma. French journalist Santi Aouna then backed that up, confirming that direct contact has been made between the clubs and that talks over the midfielder are “ongoing”.
The Blues have clearly identified Kone as a priority replacement in the event Fernandez leaves. Chelsea’s stance on the Argentine is clear: they will sell, but only if two boxes are ticked. The first is financial – they want the full £120m. The second is sporting – a “worthy replacement” must be signed before they sanction his exit.
Kone is at the heart of that plan.
Conflicting figures, same direction
The numbers flying around underline how serious Chelsea are.
Italian reporter Nico Schira stated that Chelsea had put a bid worth €65m (around £56m) on the table for Kone, though he also stressed that Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini considers the midfielder “non-transferable”. In other words, Roma do not want to sell and the final decision will rest with Kone and owner Dan Friedkin.
Not long after, Gianluca Di Marzio described the move as an “advanced” deal between Chelsea and Roma, but with a slightly lower figure than Schira’s claim. Di Marzio spoke of an agreement in the region of £52m, and also noted that Gittens is close to joining Roma on loan as part of their own reshuffle.

All of this points in one direction for Enzo Fernandez.
Manchester City are preparing what would be the standout transfer of the summer: a £120m move for the World Cup winner. At that price, Fernandez would become City’s most expensive signing of all time and the costliest midfielder in football history.
Fernandez is keen to make the switch. Chelsea are open to it, but only once their conditions are met. Landing Kone would go a long way towards that. If Roma eventually relent and accept a sizeable offer, the dominoes start to fall.
