Sanchez faith fades, Martinez steps in
For months, the message from the hierarchy was consistent: Robert Sanchez would be backed. He was the man in goal, the project, the one they believed would grow with the team.

As BBC Sport reported, “Those in charge had been keen to back Sanchez but have opted to move for Martinez days before the transfer deadline.” The timing is no coincidence. At 33, Martinez arrives to “strengthen the goalkeeping group at Stamford Bridge” – a carefully chosen phrase that still says plenty. There was earlier interest in Martinez from Juventus, but that move collapsed over concerns about a finger injury. Chelsea have chosen to push on regardless. If the medical in London throws up no issues, Martinez will stand as one of the more eye-catching late-window additions in the Premier League.

From a Chelsea perspective, this is a rare example of concern being followed by swift action. The club had publicly and privately backed Sanchez. Then they watched, reassessed and changed course. That is not panic; that is accountability in a position where hesitation is fatal.
