Chelsea Pursue Atalanta Defender Honest Ahanor

Chelsea have stepped up their pursuit of Atalanta’s rising star Honest Ahanor, opening preliminary talks with both the Serie A club and the defender’s representatives, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The London club’s interest comes after Atalanta already turned down a €34m bid from Brighton earlier in the summer, a clear indication of how highly the Bergamo side value the Italy international. Sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli underlined that stance in July, stressing that Atalanta do not intend to part with any of their best or most promising players – Ahanor firmly in that bracket.

At just 18, Ahanor has become one of the most coveted young defenders in Europe. Signed from Genoa in 2025 for €16m, he has quickly justified the investment, racking up 28 Serie A appearances and earning his senior Italy debut in June under caretaker coach Silvio Baldini.

His profile fits the modern game: left-footed, aggressive in the duel, and tactically flexible. Ahanor can operate as a left wing-back or slot in as the left-sided centre-back in a three-man defence, a versatility that naturally appeals to Chelsea as they continue to reshape their back line.

The talks also arrive against a backdrop of change in Bergamo. Giuntoli has just embarked on his first season at Atalanta and has been reunited with Maurizio Sarri, the new coach, after their previous spell together at Napoli. The pair are tasked with keeping Atalanta competitive while holding on to the core of a young, ambitious squad.

Chelsea and Atalanta are no strangers at the negotiating table. Earlier this summer, Marco Palestra completed a €60m move from the Gewiss Stadium to Stamford Bridge, a deal that showed both clubs can do major business together when the conditions are right.

Whether they can find common ground again over Ahanor, with Atalanta publicly resisting any sale of their brightest talents, is likely to define one of the late transfer sagas of this window.
