Chelsea Enter Race for Matheus Fernandes Amid Premier League Interest

The Champions League final has cleared the decks. The season is over, the accounts are being totted up, and the market has officially opened for business. One of the first serious battles of this summer could be fought over Matheus Fernandes.

Relegation has pushed West Ham into a corner, and the Portugal international is expected to leave the club in the coming weeks. His team went down; his reputation did not. Far from it.

Fernandes emerged from a grim campaign for the Hammers with his stock rising, his performances standing out against the backdrop of a sinking side. That combination — proven in the Premier League, yet still with clear room to grow — has drawn the attention of the division’s elite.

According to CaughtOffside, Chelsea have stepped into the race alongside Manchester United and Arsenal, setting up a three-way tug of war between clubs all trying to reboot their projects.

West Ham paid €44m to sign Fernandes from Southampton only a year ago and, despite relegation, they are under no illusion about his value. Any deal would need to top that fee. For the buying clubs, the calculation is simple: pay a premium now for a player already adapted to English football, or gamble elsewhere.

Chelsea see opportunity. With Xabi Alonso at the helm and a squad still being reshaped, Fernandes fits the profile of a medium-term cornerstone — young, dynamic, with enough top-flight experience to step straight into a demanding environment. Arsenal and Manchester United can make similar promises, each offering a different version of a “project” built around a return to the very top.

The financial puzzle at Stamford Bridge adds another layer. To fund a move for Fernandes, Chelsea are open to trimming the squad, with the likes of Liam Delap viewed as potential sales after an unconvincing first season at the club. Outgoings will matter as much as incomings if they are to land a player West Ham expect to turn a profit on.

Not every defensive or midfield name on the rumour mill is a live option for Chelsea, though. Ibrahima Konate has been linked with several sides ahead of a possible summer move, but he is not on the way to Stamford Bridge as things stand.

So the focus sharpens on Fernandes. Three giants circling. One relegated club holding out for a fee that reflects both what he cost and what he might become. The Champions League is done; the real contest now is who wins the race for one of the Premier League’s most intriguing summer prizes.
