Chelsea Rejects Leeds Loan Bid for Mykhailo Mudryk

Chelsea have knocked back an opening season-long loan bid from Leeds United for winger Mykhailo Mudryk, but the door is very much still open.

The proposal from Elland Road fell well short of Chelsea’s expectations, yet talks are ongoing and the Ukraine international is understood to be keen on the move. At 25, and after a long spell out of the game, he wants minutes, rhythm, and a fresh stage. Leeds can offer all three.

Mudryk has already agreed in principle to spend the season away from Stamford Bridge as he tries to rebuild his match fitness. He spent 20 months sidelined after a positive test for the banned substance meldonium, a suspension that only ended in July. Since then he has been eased back into action on Chelsea’s pre-season tour under new head coach Xabi Alonso, making a handful of substitute appearances as he feels his way back.

The winger has made it clear in recent conversations that he wants to stay in the Premier League. That stance has shaped the market around him. Strasbourg, Chelsea’s sister club under the BlueCo ownership group, are interested. So are clubs in Italy. But Mudryk’s priority is English football, and that has pushed Leeds to the front of the queue.

Leeds’ offer carries one key attraction for Chelsea: there is no option to buy. The Yorkshire club are prepared to take on his wages for the season without any clause to make the move permanent, allowing Chelsea to keep full control over Mudryk’s long-term future while still trimming their current squad.

It would be another significant piece of business in a busy summer at Elland Road. The Whites have already brought in attacker Harry Wilson from Fulham, centre-back Tarik Muharemovic from Sassuolo, goalkeeper James Trafford from Manchester City and defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach. Interest in Chelsea striker Liam Delap had surfaced earlier in the window but has since cooled, leaving Mudryk as the primary focus of their discussions with Stamford Bridge.

Leeds are not alone in the chase. Brentford also saw an opportunity and were viewed as a serious contender, especially given their long-standing admiration for the player. The Bees tried to sign Mudryk several months before Chelsea beat them to his signature from Shakhtar Donetsk for an initial £61m in 2023 and have kept tabs on him ever since. This time, though, they wanted an option to make the deal permanent. Chelsea pushed back and that stance has stalled any progress.

Coventry City have registered their interest as well, while a switch to Strasbourg remains firmly on the table. Chelsea, for their part, are also weighing up sending other players to the French side, with midfielder Dario Essugo among those being considered for a loan.

All paths are being explored, but one scenario looks increasingly remote. The prospect of Mudryk staying at Stamford Bridge for the coming season is viewed as unlikely, even if it has not been completely ruled out. His next move now rests on whether any club can match Chelsea’s terms — and whether Leeds’ persistence finally lands them a winger with a point to prove.
