Chelsea's Tactical Choices Leave Estevao Willian Waiting

Chelsea’s first attacking shake-up of the night came with a sting in the tail for their Brazilian prodigy, Estevao Willian.

With Brentford 1-0 up and the clock ticking past 70 minutes, Xabi Alonso finally rolled the dice. The new Chelsea manager, facing his first real in-game test, chose to withdraw Danny Welbeck and reshuffle rather than unleash the teenager everyone wanted to see.

Morgan Rogers was pushed into the central striking role, while Geovany Quenda came on to take Rogers’ usual berth on the left. It was a clear, deliberate choice. And it left Estevao watching on again.

For a player already under scrutiny for not starting league games, this was another small but pointed setback. Not only is he out of the XI; he’s no longer the first attacking option off the bench.

Estevao left waiting

There is, of course, a tactical logic to it. Quenda is a natural fit on the left. Estevao prefers the right or a central role. Cole Palmer, the team’s creative heartbeat, is not coming off in a game Chelsea are chasing.

To get Estevao on, Alonso would either have to shunt him or Palmer to the left, where neither is truly comfortable, or change shape entirely. On this occasion, he chose to preserve structure and familiarity.

Even so, the optics are hard to ignore. A highly hyped Brazilian teenager, signed with huge expectations, now watching another wide player leapfrog him in the in-game pecking order. His frustration will not have eased as he watched Pedro Neto grind through the full 90 minutes on the right flank, unable to make the difference Chelsea needed.

He may well be the next man called upon. But “next” is not what was sold when he arrived.

Henderson brings calm on debut

Amid the attacking angst, one Chelsea player did emerge from the first half with real credit: Jordan Henderson.

On his debut, he didn’t dazzle. He steadied. While others rushed, Henderson slowed the tempo, took sensible touches and gave Alonso’s side a measure of control in midfield that had been sorely lacking.

For Chelsea, this night is not just about a single result against Brentford. It is about Alonso quietly sketching out his depth chart, working out who he can trust and where his new pieces truly fit.

Henderson has already planted his flag. Estevao, for now, is still waiting for his moment.
