Chelsea Target Georginio Wijnaldum as Midfield Solution
Chelsea are scrambling to plug the Enzo Fernandez-sized hole in their midfield – and Georginio Wijnaldum has emerged as a surprise solution.

Deadline day at Stamford Bridge was chaotic, even by Chelsea’s recent standards. Enzo Fernandez departed for Manchester City in a British-record £125million deal, a blockbuster move that dominated the final hours of the window. Chelsea pushed to land Lamine Camara from Monaco as his replacement, but that chase collapsed before the deadline passed.
The result: Xabi Alonso starts his first weeks in charge short in the very area he most wants control – the centre of the pitch.
With the market shut, Chelsea’s options are brutally simple. They can only sign free agents. So their attention has turned to a familiar Premier League figure.
Wijnaldum on Chelsea’s radar
According to Foot Mercato, Chelsea have made contact with Georginio Wijnaldum, exploring a move that would bring the Dutch midfielder back to England at the age of 35.
Wijnaldum, a title winner with Liverpool in 2020 and a former Newcastle United stalwart, is available after leaving Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq in the summer. Chelsea view him as a short-term, stabilising presence – someone who knows the tempo, the physicality and the demands of the Premier League.
His CV in England is substantial: 277 appearances across spells at Newcastle and Liverpool, a string of crucial goals, and a central role in one of the most effective midfields of the Jürgen Klopp era.
He has also shown he can still influence games. For Al-Ettifaq last season he scored 17 times in 34 outings, a striking return for a midfielder, even if it was not enough to earn an extended deal in Saudi Arabia.
For Alonso, that blend of experience, durability and tactical intelligence makes Wijnaldum an appealing stopgap as he reshapes Chelsea’s core.
Alonso’s midfield puzzle
Alonso has wasted no time stamping his ideas on this Chelsea side. So far this season, Romeo Lavia has started both games in central midfield, the new manager trusting the Belgian to anchor his structure. He has rotated support around him, with Reece James and Cole Palmer both used in midfield roles, while Fernandez was left out amid the noise over his move to City.
Even as the World Cup winner edged towards the exit, Alonso kept his message clear. Asked about Fernandez’s future after Chelsea’s wild 4-3 win over Brighton, he stressed his priority.
“We will see. We want the best for team. If anything that will happen or develop, we are not sure. We are preparing for all the scenarios, but I know that from Wednesday, we have a team to challenge and I want to win,” he said.
That team, though, has taken another hit. Moises Caicedo, signed for £115m and expected to be a cornerstone of the midfield, limped off on Sunday, adding fresh concern to an already thin area.
So Alonso stands at the start of his Chelsea reign with a stripped-back engine room, an injured record signing and his most experienced midfielder now wearing City blue.
No wonder the club are looking at Wijnaldum. The question is simple: can a 35-year-old free agent steady a project built on youth and huge spending, or will Chelsea be forced to ride the storm until the next window opens?
