Debuts, returns and a first look at Alonso’s Chelsea
Morgan Rogers is expected to pull on a Chelsea shirt for the first time, the 21-year-old winger in line for a debut as pre-season closes against the Basque visitors.
He is not alone on that front. Valentin Barco, Jordan Henderson and Maxence Lacroix are all pushing for their first minutes of the summer, while Pep Chavarria has now joined the group after completing his move from Rayo Vallecano and could also be involved.
Alonso’s pre-season has been long and uneven, stretched across Australia and Asia, with performances veering from slick to disjointed. Results do not define August, but the mood they create lingers into September. A convincing display against Sociedad would steady the noise around a club that has rarely been quiet.
The manager at least has a full room to choose from. Chelsea’s remaining post-World Cup absentees have finally reported back to Cobham, giving Alonso his first real look at the entire group just days before the season starts.
Enzo Fernandez saga parked – for now
That includes Enzo Fernandez, whose future has hovered over Chelsea’s summer.
The midfielder has been linked with Manchester City and Real Madrid, but the club moved to shut down the distraction. A deadline of 5pm BST on Friday was set for any formal bids to land. None did. With a £120million valuation placed on the Argentine and that cut-off now passed, Chelsea are not entertaining further offers.
For Alonso, that brings short-term certainty in the middle of the pitch. Fernandez stays, at least into the new campaign, and the focus returns to how he fits into a midfield that could feature Henderson and Moises Caicedo.
Emegha back, attack under the microscope
Up front, another new signing is edging back into the picture. Emmanuel Emegha has returned to training after the hamstring problem that kept him out of the club’s hectic tour and is pushing for minutes against Sociedad.
He joins a crowded and unsettled group of forwards. Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu are all still here, all still training, and all still unsure where they will actually start the season.
Chelsea value Delap at around £50m. Jackson and Guiu could also move on before the window closes. Alonso has yet to decide who will sit behind first-choice striker Joao Pedro, with Danny Welbeck also in the mix. Today offers one of the last live auditions.
Defensive logjam as window ticks down
The congestion is even more striking at centre-back. As many as five central defenders could leave before the window shuts in two weeks.
Tosin Adarabioyo has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs and Portuguese giants Benfica. Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile have long been viewed as expendable, and the club are actively working on exits for both.
Mamadou Sarr might yet stay with the first team, though Chelsea would happily send him on loan to a Premier League side if the right opportunity appears. Aaron Anselmino was also lined up for a loan, but a hamstring injury suffered in the final tour game against Johor Darul Ta'zim has halted those plans and looks set to keep him at the club for now.
For Alonso, that means options everywhere and decisions everywhere. Today’s selections will be read as clues.
