Colorado Rapids Record Transfer of Lucas Herrington to Hull City
Colorado Rapids have cashed in on their brightest young star, sending defender Lucas Herrington to Premier League side Hull City in a club-record transfer that also rewrites the MLS books.
The 18-year-old Australian international moves for a fee reportedly rising to $23 million — $17 million guaranteed — plus a sell-on clause, the largest outbound transfer for a defender in league history. Not bad for a player Colorado picked up for under $1 million less than a year ago.
From bargain buy to record sale
Herrington arrived in August 2025 from A-League outfit Brisbane Roar FC on a pre-contract, a low-key move at the time that now looks like one of the shrewdest pieces of business in Rapids history. He didn’t take long to justify the gamble.
By 2026, the center back had forced his way into the MLS All-Star squad, broken into the Socceroos setup, and featured in two matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This season, he’s logged 20 games for Colorado, chipping in 1 goal and 1 assist while anchoring their back line.
That rapid ascent is exactly what the Rapids front office has been trying to build.
“Lucas is a special talent whose elite mentality and character match his outstanding ability on the field,” club president Pádraig Smith said. “We are incredibly proud of everything he accomplished during his time with the Rapids and excited for him as he takes this next step in his career.

A teenager who crossed the world
For Herrington, the move caps a whirlwind first year away from home.
“When I landed in Colorado in January, I had left Australia for the first time to come across the world and chase a dream. The Rapids and their fans took a chance on me and made me feel at home from day one,” he said.
“I’m grateful to my family, my teammates and coach Matt Wells, and Padraig Smith for believing in me, supporting my growth and giving me the opportunity to take the next steps in my career. To the fans: thank you for embracing a kid from Brisbane as one of your own. Colorado has given me so much, and I’ll always be proud to have been a Rapid. Hull’s Premier League return gets a statement signing
Hull City, back in the Premier League for the first time since the 2016-17 season, land a defender whose stock has exploded on both sides of the Atlantic. The Tigers earned promotion by beating Middlesbrough in the 2025-26 EFL Championship playoff final and now add a World Cup-tested center back to help them stay up.
For Hull, it’s a bold move. For Herrington, it’s a leap into the most unforgiving league in the world.
What it means for Colorado
The deal also drops a significant decision in the lap of first-year head coach Matt Wells, formerly an assistant at Tottenham Hotspur. Colorado sit 11th in the Western Conference, two points off the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs line, and have just lost the linchpin of their defense in mid-season.
The Rapids have proven they can identify and develop a player capable of jumping straight from MLS to the Premier League. Now comes the harder part: replacing him quickly enough to keep their playoff push alive.
