Philippe Coutinho Joins Neymar at Santos: A Long-Awaited Reunion

Philippe Coutinho has finally joined forces with Neymar at club level, signing for Santos for the rest of the season, the Brazilian side confirmed on Monday.

The move brings together two of Brazil’s most gifted attacking players of their generation, who have long shared a national-team bond but never a club shirt.

A long-awaited club reunion

Santos released a slick video to announce Coutinho’s arrival, capturing the moment he walked into the dressing room and was greeted by Neymar. The forward did not hide his emotions.

"If it's a dream, I don't want to wake up," Neymar told Coutinho in the clip, a line that instantly lit up Brazilian social media.

For all their shared history with Brazil, their club paths had always just missed. Coutinho’s five-year spell at Liverpool turned him into one of Europe’s most dangerous playmakers and earned him a big-money move to Barcelona in January 2018. Neymar, though, had already departed Camp Nou by then, leaving for Paris St Germain in August 2017.

So they never shared the pitch in Barcelona colours. They will now do it in the white of Santos.

Back to Brazil, again

Coutinho’s return comes at another turning point in his career. The 32-year-old last played for Brazil in March 2022 and went back to his boyhood club Vasco da Gama in 2024, only to leave in February this year.

Neymar, 34, made his own comeback to Santos last year, the club where he first exploded onto the global stage. After Brazil’s World Cup exit in July, he announced his international retirement, drawing a line under a turbulent but prolific spell with the national team.

Now both men find themselves back where it all began for Brazilian football’s most romantic narrative: at home, in the Brasileirão, sharing a dressing room at Santos and trying to write one more meaningful chapter.
