Cristian Romero Joins Atlético Madrid on Long-Term Deal
Atlético Madrid have their new defensive enforcer – and they’ve gone all in to get him.
The Spanish club have completed the signing of centre-back Cristian Romero from Tottenham, landing the 28-year-old Argentina international on a long-term deal that runs until 30 June 2031. The fee reportedly climbs to around €40 million, a statement outlay for a player they believe can anchor their back line for the rest of the decade.
Romero passed his medical at the Vithas-Invictum High-Performance Sports Medicine Centre in Madrid, then headed to the club offices at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano to sign the final paperwork. By the end of the day, Diego Simeone had the kind of defender he has always cherished: aggressive, authoritative, and battle-tested at the highest level.
From London leader to Madrid cornerstone
Romero leaves Tottenham after five eventful seasons in north London, a spell that transformed him from promising Serie A stopper into one of Europe’s most coveted centre-backs.
He initially arrived at Spurs on loan for the 2021–22 campaign, impressed immediately, and was signed permanently. Across his time in England he stacked up 156 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with 13 goals and seven assists – impressive numbers for a defender whose primary job was to snuff out danger, not create it.
His defining chapter in England came in the 2024–25 season. That year, Romero helped drive Spurs to Europa League glory, ending the club’s 31-year wait for a European trophy. He didn’t just ride the wave; he led it. He was named the competition’s best player and the standout performer in the final, the kind of double recognition that cements a reputation rather than merely enhances it.
A career built on steady climbs
Romero’s rise has followed a clear, uncompromising path. Born in Córdoba, Argentina, he broke through at Club Atlético Belgrano in 2016 before making the leap to Europe with Genoa in Serie A. Juventus moved for him in 2019, then sent him on loan first back to Genoa and then to Atalanta, where his game truly exploded.
During the 2020–21 season with Atalanta, Romero was named Serie A’s best defender. Week after week he mixed timing and tenacity, stepping out to win duels, defending on the front foot, and giving Atalanta’s adventurous style a hard edge behind the ball. Those performances opened the door to the Premier League and the move to Tottenham.
The same relentlessness has defined his international career. Romero has already collected 58 senior caps for Argentina and built a remarkable record in major tournaments. He has never finished below second place with the national team, winning the 2022 World Cup, two Copa América titles and the Finalissima, along with a runners-up finish at the 2026 World Cup. Few defenders arrive in La Liga with that kind of medal haul and big-game experience.

Now comes the next test: La Liga under Diego Simeone.
With a contract that runs through June 2031, Romero is not a short-term fix. Atlético see him as a pillar, a defender whose blend of physicality, timing in the tackle and leadership can reshape their back line. His aerial strength, comfort defending large spaces and habit of thriving in high-stakes matches all fit the demands of a club that measures itself by deep European runs and title races, not just top-four finishes.
For Romero, it is a new league, but a familiar challenge. He has already proved himself in Serie A and the Premier League. Now he walks into a Simeone dressing room that prizes exactly what he brings: edge, resilience and a refusal to back down.
Atlético believe they have secured more than a signing. They think they’ve found the defender around whom the next era of their defence will be built. The only question now is how quickly Romero can turn that belief into the kind of snarling, unyielding back line that has so often defined this club at its best.
