Australian Soccer Star Cristian Volpato Faces Cocaine Allegations After Speeding Incidents
Cristian Volpato, who gained attention playing for Australia at the World Cup, allegedly tested positive for cocaine after being stopped for speeding in Sydney. The 22-year-old midfielder, once an Italy youth international before switching to Australia, was caught driving well above the speed limit on two separate occasions.
Details of the Traffic Stops
New South Wales police reported that Volpato was first pulled over around 11pm on Thursday for exceeding the speed limit by more than 20km/h. An alcohol test was administered then, showing no signs of intoxication.
About two hours later, at roughly 1am Friday, he was stopped again on Sydney's Anzac Bridge. This time, officers recorded his speed at 109km/h, which is 50km/h over the legal limit.
Drug Testing and License Suspension
Following the second stop, a roadside drug test indicated the presence of cocaine. Police said a secondary sample will be tested for confirmation. Meanwhile, Volpato’s driver’s license has been suspended for six months as part of the investigation.
Volpato’s Background
Born in Sydney, Volpato currently plays club football in Italy with Sassuolo. He initially represented Italy at the Under-20 level after joining Roma in 2020 but switched allegiance to Australia ahead of the recent World Cup, where he made three appearances and stood out as a key player.
