According to The Athletic, Boehly sat down with Jorge Mendes and listened closely. Ronaldo, now at Al-Nassr, was stuck in a struggling United side that had just finished sixth in the Premier League. The relationship with the club was fraying, the mood sour, and the future uncertain. For Boehly, the opportunity felt obvious: bring one of the game’s biggest global stars to west London and make him the face of a new era.

The idea quickly moved beyond fantasy. The deal was discussed, the numbers explored, and CR7’s name became a central piece of Boehly’s early blueprint for Chelsea.

Tuchel shuts it down

Thomas Tuchel, Champions League winner with the Blues just a year earlier, held the final say. And he did not hesitate.

The German coach, The Athletic reports, made his “firm opposition” to any agreement for Ronaldo “very clear on several occasions.” Tuchel simply did not see a place for the Portuguese forward in his plans, tactically or structurally. His stance was unwavering.

That resistance killed the move. Despite Boehly’s interest and the exploratory talks with Mendes, Tuchel’s veto blocked Ronaldo’s path to Stamford Bridge.

Ronaldo’s second United chapter, running from 2021 to 2023, ultimately collapsed in acrimony. Chelsea moved on in other directions under Boehly. And one of the most intriguing what-ifs of recent Premier League history remained just that: a deal that lived in meetings and phone calls, but never made it to the pitch.
