Dante Returns to Bayern to Lead U23s

FC Bayern are turning to a familiar face and a rising coaching mind to shape their next generation.

Dante, the charismatic centre-back who once anchored Bayern’s treble-winning defence, is set to take over the club’s U23s this summer and begin his coaching career in Munich. At his side: Christopher Keyhanfar, a coach whose path has run through some of Europe’s sharpest football schools.

From Oberliga pitches to Europe’s elite benches

Keyhanfar played on until 2019, climbing as high as the Oberliga, but his real future always lay on the touchline. He started coaching even before he stopped playing, building his reputation step by step.

Via SV Gonsenheim and Mainz 05’s U19s, he earned a move to Austria in 2020 to work with Red Bull Salzburg’s reserve side, FC Liefering – a club known for fast-tracking both players and coaches. From there, he returned to Mainz to work under Bo Svensson, then spent several months at Union Berlin, experiencing the Bundesliga from another angle.

Keyhanfar has already shadowed Jürgen Klopp, an experience that underlines how seriously the industry takes his potential. Since the end of 2024, he has been out of work, but not out of the conversation. Now he is set to re-emerge in one of the most scrutinised academies in Europe, forming a partnership with Dante in Bayern’s youth setup.

Dante’s second life in Munich

At 42, Dante is still playing at the top level with OGC Nice in Ligue 1, a testament to his durability and professionalism. Bayern fans remember a defender who combined personality with reliability: 133 competitive appearances between 2012 and 2015, three Bundesliga titles, three DFB-Pokals, and the Champions League crown that sealed the 2013 treble.

That experience now feeds into a different kind of responsibility. The Brazilian is expected to lead Bayern’s U23s, stepping into the role long held by Holger Seitz. For Dante, it is a clean starting line as a coach, but on a stage he knows intimately.

A handover in the academy

Seitz, 51, has been a central figure in Bayern’s second team setup since 2020, with only a brief interruption. He previously steered the U23s to the Regionalliga title in 2018/19, a landmark that underlined Bayern’s ability to compete and develop at that level. His work now continues in a new role within the club, ensuring his experience stays in-house.

Dante and Keyhanfar inherit that foundation, but they will be judged on what comes next: how many players they push towards the first team, how boldly they shape Bayern’s future rather than just guarding its past.
