David Warner Charged with Drink Driving After Roadside Test

David Warner’s life after international cricket has taken an unwelcome turn, with the former Australia opener charged with mid-range drink driving following a roadside breath test.

The 39-year-old, who continues to ply his trade in Twenty20 leagues around the world, was allegedly behind the wheel of a van that pulled up and parked short of a random testing site on Sunday. That decision drew the attention of police.

According to national broadcaster ABC, officers approached the vehicle and subjected Warner to a breath test, which returned a positive result. He was then arrested and taken to a local police station.

Local media reported that Warner was formally charged with mid-range drink driving and later released. He is scheduled to appear in court on May 7.

Police issued a statement detailing the incident but did not name the driver involved. Warner, however, was identified in multiple reports, placing one of Australia’s most prolific modern cricketers back under an uncomfortable spotlight.

The left-hander retired from international duty in 2024, closing a Test career that brought 8,786 runs in 112 matches and a stack of defining innings at the top of the order. Now, instead of talk centring on his next franchise contract or farewell lap in T20 cricket, attention will turn to a courtroom and the consequences of a night that went badly wrong.
