Declan Rice Isolated as England Prepares for Norway Clash
Declan Rice has been separated from the rest of the England squad after falling ill on the eve of their World Cup quarter-final against Norway, with FA staff acting quickly to prevent a wider outbreak in camp.
The Arsenal midfielder, already managing hamstring and lower back issues, has now been hit by a bug that has ruled him out of training for two consecutive days. Medical staff have moved him away from the main group as England look to keep their preparations on track for Saturday’s knockout tie.
For Gareth Southgate and his staff, the timing could hardly be worse. Rice is a central pillar of England’s midfield, a player who carried heavy minutes for Arsenal last season, often playing through the pain barrier at the Emirates Stadium. Now, as the stakes rise, he finds himself confined and monitored while his teammates fine-tune for Norway.
Inside the camp, there is quiet confidence that the illness has been contained. The isolation measures are designed precisely for this moment: one case, not a chain reaction. Whether Rice recovers in time to feature remains unclear, but the risk of a wider disruption appears to be under control for now.
Back in North London, Mikel Arteta will be watching closely. Rice is already due to report late for Arsenal’s pre-season because of his World Cup involvement, and this latest setback only sharpens the focus on his workload. Arteta wants his side to start fast next season, yet his midfield cornerstone is dealing with both physical strain and illness deep into the summer.
Arsenal’s pre-season plans are already stretched by international commitments. Their summer schedule begins in Girona on August 1, but Rice will be absent, along with Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke, who are all tied up with England’s World Cup campaign and then owed a three-week break once they exit the tournament.
That means the quartet will miss Arsenal’s opening pre-season fixture and, almost certainly, the second match against Real Betis in Dublin on August 5 if England progress to the semi-finals. The early weeks of Arteta’s build-up will be run without several of his key attacking and midfield pieces.
The disruption does not stop there. Captain Martin Odegaard is away with Norway, William Saliba with France, David Raya, Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino with Spain, and Leandro Trossard with Belgium. Spain face Belgium tonight for a place in the last four, while France have already booked their semi-final spot with a 2-0 win over Morocco.
For England, the priority is simple: keep Rice’s illness a one-off and get through Norway unscathed. For Arsenal, the picture is broader. A squad central to their title ambitions will return late, tired, and in some cases patched up.
How quickly that group can reset after a draining World Cup may well define the opening chapter of their season.
