Derby County Secures Victory Against Portsmouth with Salvesen's Thunderous Goal

Darren Robinson hailed Derby County’s response to their stuttering start to the season after the Rams finally broke their winless run with a hard-fought victory over Portsmouth, sealed by a thunderous strike from Lars-Jorgen Salvesen.

The former Derby midfielder was struck by the quality – and timing – of the Norwegian’s decisive effort.

"It was a quality finish in the way he came on to the ball and it was a confident finish," Robinson said, highlighting the contrast with much of what had gone before.

Portsmouth had peppered Derby’s goal with efforts from range, but Robinson felt they never truly found the decisive touch.

"There were lots of shots from distance, particularly from Portsmouth, but they lacked that cutting edge - but you watch that finish by Salvesen. He comes on to it and he absolutely thumps it - it was still rising as it hit the back of the net."

The goal came just as the home side needed it most. Fratton Park had started to swell with belief after the break, Portsmouth feeding off the noise and pushing Derby back.

"It was an important time to score because the crowd were building a bit of energy. Portsmouth had given that reaction after half-time and that really burst the bubble," Robinson added.

One strike, right when the pressure was starting to squeeze, might just be the moment Derby’s season starts to turn.
