Ebbsfleet United Cleared to Start National League South Season
Ebbsfleet United will finally start their National League South campaign on Saturday after the league lifted the club’s suspension following weeks of financial turmoil.
The Kent side saw their opening six fixtures postponed while they battled serious money problems, culminating in a winding-up petition from HMRC over unpaid debts dating back to April.
That crisis eased last month when new owner John O'Leary completed a takeover, allowing the club to settle what was owed to HMRC and pay outstanding wages to players.
In a statement on Wednesday, the club thanked supporters, players and staff for standing firm during the uncertainty, praising the squad and employees for what it called “exemplary conduct” through a difficult spell.
The National League’s compliance and licensing committee has imposed a suspended six-point deduction on Ebbsfleet. That punishment will come into force if the club fails to meet a series of “obligations” which have not yet been detailed publicly.
Earlier this week, the sixth-tier club confirmed it had submitted full documentation to the National League, including proof that funds were in place to clear all liabilities. HMRC, the club said, had also confirmed there were no outstanding amounts due.
The committee met on Tuesday and decided to lift the suspension with immediate effect, clearing Ebbsfleet to face Walton & Hersham on Saturday and finally step onto the pitch this season.
The shackles have not been completely removed. A transfer embargo remains, with the club still barred from registering new players.
In its statement, the National League said it still believed there were “issues for the club to satisfy the league on, with regard to compliance with rules and regulations”, but confirmed Ebbsfleet’s suspension had been lifted in line with its regulations and stressed that the registration embargo stays in place.
The committee has demanded further specific actions from the club and intends to remain in close contact.
