Eddie Howe has barely been out of work, yet his name is already circling one of the biggest jobs in English football.
The former Newcastle United manager, who walked away from St James’ Park in stunning fashion midway through pre-season, is understood to be open to an approach from Manchester United if the club decides to part ways with Michael Carrick after a stuttering start to the campaign.
The claim came on Thursday from Indy Kaila, who reported on X that United’s hierarchy is prepared to act if results do not improve and that Howe would listen to any formal offer from Old Trafford.

For the moment, Carrick remains in the dugout and there is no vacancy to fill. But the mood behind the scenes is shifting. United’s owners are described as increasingly impatient after an unconvincing opening to the season, compounded by early struggles in domestic cup competition.
The pressure is building. The question is how long they wait.
According to the report, sources say the club’s powerbrokers are ready to make an “immediate change in the dugout” if the current form drags on. In that scenario, Howe — currently unemployed and available — is believed to be willing to take charge should United make a formal move.
That would haul Howe straight back into Premier League management only a few months after he left Newcastle, and drop him into the glare of one of the sport’s most scrutinised stages, with the Red Devils competing in the Champions League this season.
It would also complete a remarkable arc. Howe took over Newcastle in late 2021 with the club staring at a relegation battle. He dragged them clear of danger, then drove them into the conversation for European places and delivered the club’s first domestic success in years. Under his watch, Newcastle shifted from survival mode to genuine contenders.
His surprise departure this summer opened the door for Matthias Jaissle, who has begun to remodel Newcastle around a significantly altered squad after a flurry of high-profile exits and arrivals. The Howe era ended abruptly; the rebuild under Jaissle has started at pace.
Now the same coach who helped transform Newcastle’s fortunes is being linked with a rapid return at Old Trafford, where expectation never sleeps and patience is famously thin.
