Edu Leaves Nottingham Forest Amidst Turbulent Year
Edu’s brief and bumpy stint at Nottingham Forest is over, with the club’s global head of football leaving just over a year after arriving at the City Ground.
The former Arsenal midfielder, whose contract is understood to have been terminated, had not been seen at a Forest game since February. His departure had been anticipated for months inside the club, the end of a spell marked by internal friction and relentless managerial churn.
Tension and Managerial Changes
Tension first burst into public view during the short reign of Nuno Espirito Santo. Nuno, appointed and then sacked last September in what became the first of four managerial changes in a chaotic season, hinted at serious disagreements behind closed doors. He openly suggested his relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis had shifted, a clear signal that all was not aligned at the top of the club’s football operation.
Edu’s role quickly came under scrutiny in that atmosphere. Now, Forest will not seek a direct replacement. Instead, chief football officer George Syrianos will absorb Edu’s responsibilities, tightening control of football decisions under a smaller inner circle.
Edu's Background
Edu had arrived in July 2025 with a broad and powerful remit. His portfolio stretched beyond Nottingham, taking in Olympiacos in Greece and Rio Ave in Portugal, both also owned by Marinakis. It was a multi-club brief that appeared to mirror his growing influence in the game after a six-year rise at Arsenal.
At the Emirates, he became the club’s first sporting director in 2022, having already built a reputation as a key architect of their modern rebuild. As a player he had collected two Premier League titles and two FA Cups with the Gunners. As an executive, he played a central role in bringing Mikel Arteta to Arsenal, a decision vindicated in spectacular fashion when Arteta delivered the club’s first Premier League crown in 22 years last season.
Forest hoped to tap into that pedigree. Instead, his time at the City Ground has ended abruptly, another high-profile departure in a club still trying to find a stable structure at the top.
Boardroom Reshaping
The timing is no coincidence. Edu’s exit follows a reshaping of the boardroom, with former Olympiacos vice-president Theodore Giannikos appointed chief executive last week. Giannikos replaces Lina Souloukou, who stepped down at the end of last season, continuing a pattern of turnover that now stretches from the dugout to the executive suite.
Forest have survived on-the-pitch turbulence before. The question now is whether this latest reset in the corridors of power finally brings clarity to a club that has spent a year living on the edge of upheaval.
