England Fans Select World Cup Squad: Tuchel's Choices Align
Before Thomas Tuchel revealed his 26-man England squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the country had already picked its team.
A total of 35,389 supporters stepped into the dugout via the Squad Selector game on the official England app, submitting their own versions of the Three Lions squad right up until the night before the head coach went live with his announcement on the same platform.
The result? A striking show of unity between the stands and the man in the technical area.
Fans and Tuchel in lockstep
When the numbers were crunched, the ten most-selected players by fans all made Tuchel’s final list. No debate, no late shock omissions at the very top of the popularity chart.
Jordan Pickford emerged as the near-unanimous choice in goal. He featured in 35,233 of the 35,389 fan squads, an extraordinary 99.6% selection rate that underlines his status as England’s established No1.
Ahead of him, the spine of the team picked itself in the eyes of the public. Harry Kane, the captain and goalscoring reference point, appeared in 99.4% of squads (35,183 entries). Declan Rice, the midfield anchor around whom so much of England’s structure is built, followed on 99.2% (35,093).
Jude Bellingham, the new standard-bearer for England’s modern midfield, was just behind on 98.7% (34,929), while Bukayo Saka, the constant threat from wide areas, featured in 97.5% of submissions (34,514).
This wasn’t a fanbase torn between old favourites and new faces. The core was clear, and Tuchel agreed.
New pillars and trusted names
The defensive faith shown in Marc Guéhi was notable. Selected by 97.3% of fans (34,421 squads), the centre-back has clearly convinced supporters he belongs at the heart of England’s back line.
Higher up the pitch, Marcus Rashford’s inclusion in 94.9% of squads (33,588) spoke to the enduring belief in his ability to decide big games, even with competition fierce in attacking positions.
At right-back, a position that has sparked more debate than most in recent years, Reece James still commanded strong backing. He appeared in 90.1% of fan selections (31,899), a sign that, when fit, his blend of power and delivery remains highly valued.
Then came two names that underline where the excitement is building.
- Morgan Rogers, chosen by 87.5% of fans (30,957)
- Nico O’Reilly, included in 86.5% (30,597)
Both surged into the upper tier of popularity. Neither carries the long-established international profile of Kane or Pickford, yet both have clearly captured the imagination, seen by supporters as part of England’s immediate future rather than distant prospects.
A rare alignment
For once, the national conversation around selection did not fracture into familiar camps. The fans’ collective XI, distilled from tens of thousands of entries, landed squarely on the same key figures as Tuchel’s official squad.
In a World Cup year, with expectation never far from boiling point, that kind of alignment between terraces and touchline is not just a curiosity. It is a statement of where England stand: a core the country trusts, emerging talent the fans are eager to see, and a head coach whose major calls, at least for now, mirror the instincts of the people watching.
