How England Could Line Up Against Norway in World Cup Quarter-Final: Tuchel Faces Right-Back Dilemma

England's Key Selection Challenge Ahead of Quarter-Final vs Norway

Thomas Tuchel faces a critical choice for England as they prepare to meet Norway in the World Cup quarter-final in Miami on Saturday. The Three Lions come into this match as favourites, boasting more talent across the pitch than their Scandinavian rivals. Still, Tuchel’s decisions won’t be straightforward.

The recent clash against Mexico at the Azteca left some players nursing injuries. Marc Guehi is recovering from a knock, and fatigue was evident by the final whistle. Reece James’ hamstring has been a persistent issue all tournament. Right-back is now a headache after Jarell Quansah received a two-match suspension.

Despite these challenges, England’s squad depth offers multiple options. Alongside the usual starters, defenders like Dan Burn, Djed Spence, and John Stones have contributed when called upon. Morgan Rogers remains an untested asset who might get a chance on Saturday.

Goalkeeper: Jordan Pickford

Pickford showed signs of improvement recently after a rocky start to the tournament. Earlier matches highlighted some errors, such as letting DR Congo score in the knockout round and shaky moments against Ghana. Tuchel even criticized him for slow ball movement versus Croatia.

But at the Azteca, Pickford was outstanding. He produced three crucial saves against Raul Jimenez, punched the ball away five times, and spent much of the final 30 minutes fending off attacks. That performance felt like a turning point.

Right-Back Options: Reece James or Alternatives

Quansah’s suspension leaves England short on right-back options. Despite his good form before the sending off, the ban stands firm. James has been training fully and appears ready, but his hamstring troubles make his selection a gamble.

Centre-Back: Ezri Konsa and Marc Guehi

Konsa’s record against Erling Haaland is intriguing. Across five Premier League matches, Haaland has managed just one goal against him over 406 minutes. Whether this is down to system, luck, or Konsa’s marking, it could be exactly the match-up England needs.

Guehi, despite a minor hamstring injury from the Mexico game, should start alongside Konsa. His steady improvement and excellent showing last week edge him ahead of Stones, who also impressed but might miss out this time.

Left-Back: Nico O'Reilly

O’Reilly has shown promise going forward, especially his growing connection with Anthony Gordon. His defensive skills were tested last week, and he performed well, though he did receive a booking that forced an early substitution. Assuming no setbacks, he’s likely to start and play the full match.

Midfield Trio

  • Elliot Anderson: Offers balance in midfield. Not perfect defensively but consistent and trusted by Manchester City’s scouts who paid big money for him.
  • Declan Rice: Running low on energy after hard games and carrying a nagging hamstring issue, yet his commitment and presence remain vital for England.
  • Jude Bellingham: Versatile and dynamic, Bellingham has played multiple roles recently. His form will be crucial to England’s progress.

Attack

  • Left Wing - Anthony Gordon: A key figure defensively and offensively, winning a penalty in the Mexico game. Marcus Rashford remains a contender but Gordon’s current form gives him the edge.
  • Striker - Harry Kane: Kane’s goal tally lags behind Mbappe’s, dimming his Golden Boot hopes, but he remains England’s irreplaceable leader upfront.
  • Right Wing - Bukayo Saka: Saka’s pace can fade mid-game due to a recurring issue, yet his creativity and assists, like the one to Bellingham, keep him indispensable.
