“It was simply because of today’s match. We have other players who need minutes,” he explained in his post-match press conference, underlining that the choice was shaped by the specific demands of facing Luton.
Pressed on when he had decided to leave Enzo out, Alonso was blunt and precise: “Wednesday afternoon. It was a decision I made myself.”
No questions over professionalism
The Spaniard repeatedly moved to protect Fernández’s reputation and attitude. If there is tension over the midfielder’s future, Alonso did not show it in public.
“Enzo is a good professional. He is training well and I have nothing to say about that,” he said, making it clear there had been no drop-off in standards at Cobham.
For now, the official line is simple: a tactical call, a packed squad, and minutes to share around.
Sunday becomes the next flashpoint
The story now rolls on toward the weekend. Chelsea face Brighton at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, and Alonso left the door open for Fernández to return to the fold.
“Enzo is a good professional. He is training well and I have nothing to say about that. They are simply decisions we have to make with the match we were playing tonight in mind. We’ll see on Sunday,” he repeated.
If Fernández is back in the squad, the noise may cool. If he is missing again, with Manchester City circling and the window about to slam shut, the questions around Chelsea’s record signing will only get louder.
