Enzo Fernandez's Chelsea Future Amid Transfer Speculation

Enzo Fernandez has reported back for Chelsea duty with what Xabi Alonso calls a “really good attitude” as the midfielder’s future continues to hang over the club’s final weeks of the transfer window.

Chelsea had agreed with Fernandez’s agent, Javier Pastore, in late May that the Argentina international could leave for £120m, but only if a buyer arrived before a strict 14 August deadline. That date has come and gone without a formal bid.

So Chelsea’s stance has hardened. The message to Fernandez’s camp is now clear: he is not for sale in this window.

Manchester City, led by his former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, have not backed off. City remain keen on the 25-year-old and believe the London club still want to strike a deal. The noise has not gone away, even if the door appears to have been slammed shut.

Alonso, though, is steering the conversation back to the pitch as Chelsea gear up for their Premier League opener at Fulham on Monday. Asked on Thursday whether Fernandez would still be at Stamford Bridge when the window closes on 1 September, the head coach did not hesitate.

“Enzo is a Chelsea player. We are happy with him and he's getting ready for Monday,” he said in his pre-match news conference.

Alonso stressed that Fernandez has “integrated really well” since rejoining the group after the World Cup and is “training really well”, underlining his importance to the current project rather than any future auction.

“I see him with a really good attitude and that's what we want,” Alonso added.

The speculation will rumble on. For now, Chelsea expect Fernandez to anchor their midfield at Craven Cottage, not to headline a late-window saga.
