Enzo Fernández's Chelsea Future in Doubt Amid Transfer Speculation

Enzo Fernández’s Chelsea future has been thrown back into doubt after Xabi Alonso left the midfielder out of the squad for the EFL Cup tie against Luton Town, with Manchester City circling ahead of the transfer deadline.

Alonso, though, stood firm on his explanation. For him, this was about football, not the market.

The Chelsea head coach repeatedly stressed Fernández’s attitude behind the scenes, calling him “extremely professional” and highlighting the standard of his work in training. The decision, he said, came down to rotation and the specific demands of the Luton tie.

“It was simply about today’s match,” Alonso said after the win. “We have other players who need minutes to play.”

Asked when he decided to leave the World Cup winner out, Alonso did not hesitate. “Wednesday evening. It’s a decision I made,” he replied, underlining that this was his call, made on his timeline.

The message was clear: no punishment, no fallout, no grand statement. Just a selection choice. At least, that was the public line.

Even so, the timing is impossible to ignore. With reports in England that City are weighing up an offer, every game Fernández misses will be read as a clue, every omission a potential signal.

Alonso did, however, keep the door wide open for an immediate return. Chelsea face Brighton in the league at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, and the manager made a point of stressing that Fernández remains firmly in his plans.

“Enzo is a good professional. He trains well, and I have nothing to say about that,” Alonso said. “Simply, these are decisions we have to make with the match we played tonight in mind. We’ll see on Sunday.”

So the situation hangs in the balance. On one side, a coach insisting this is routine rotation. On the other, a major Premier League rival quietly plotting a move and a player who has already signalled a willingness to leave.

If Fernández is back in blue against Brighton, the noise may die down for a moment. If he is not, the questions over his Chelsea future will only get louder as the clock ticks towards the end of the window.
