Enzo Fernández's Future at Chelsea: Uncertainty Amid Manchester City Interest

Xabi Alonso has refused to promise that Chelsea will stand firm if Manchester City come hard for Enzo Fernández – and the uncertainty around the midfielder is beginning to define their window.

No guarantees on Enzo

Fernández’s future is still hanging in the balance. Chelsea’s unofficial deadline for clubs to lodge written offers of £120m for the Argentina international has come and gone, yet the prospect of him leaving Stamford Bridge remains very much alive.

City are circling. With Rodri gone to Barcelona and a midfield rebuild under way, they have identified Fernández as a prime target and are weighing up whether to move before the window closes. Roma’s Manu Koné is also on their list, but Fernández is high up the agenda.

Chelsea know they are in a delicate position. The 25-year-old has made no secret of his desire to move on and, asked directly whether Fernández would still be his player at the end of the window, Alonso refused to nail anything down.

“Enzo is a Chelsea player,” the former Real Madrid manager said. “He’s a top player. He’s training really well since he started 10 days ago with the team. Very integrated, and we are happy with him. He’s getting ready for Monday.”

The words were complimentary. The message was cautious.

Fernández is expected to be in the squad when Chelsea open their Premier League campaign away to Fulham on Monday night, but even there Alonso sidestepped a key question: has the £106.7m signing actually told him he wants to stay?

“He’s training really well. I see him with a good attitude. That’s what we want. Everyone is trying their best to prepare for the kick off of the Premier League,” Alonso replied, keeping the focus on preparation rather than commitment.

Replacements lined up – but no easy deals

Chelsea’s stance is clear on one point: if Fernández goes, another midfielder must come in.

They are strong admirers of Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, yet that pursuit has already hit resistance. One offer has been rejected and Bournemouth have made it clear they intend to hold on to the 22-year-old this summer.

Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton is viewed as an alternative option. That battle would not be straightforward either. City have already seen a bid for the England midfielder turned down by Palace, underlining how expensive and complicated any late reshaping of Chelsea’s midfield could become.

For Alonso and the recruitment team, the situation is “fluid” – and heavily dependent on what City decide to do next.

Trimming the squad, weighing the risk

While the Enzo saga dominates the headlines, Alonso is also trying to slim down a bloated squad before the deadline.

Up front, Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap and Marc Guiu have slipped down the pecking order and are expected to move on. Delap, in particular, has no shortage of admirers: Everton, Leeds, Ipswich and Nottingham Forest are all tracking the forward as they look to bolster their attacking options.

There is interest in departures and arrivals elsewhere in the squad. Chelsea are open to offers for Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto, while Palace want to strengthen their back line by taking Axel Disasi on loan.

So Chelsea head into the new season with a familiar tension. A marquee midfielder unsettled. A superclub predator in Manchester City considering a strike. Replacements identified but locked behind hard negotiating lines.

If City finally push their chips in, will Chelsea cash out on Enzo Fernández – or gamble that keeping him is worth more than £120m?
