When the deadline passed without a formal bid, Chelsea’s stance hardened. Barring a late twist, the club now expects Fernández to stay and be part of their plans through the 2026–2027 season, even if the door is not completely slammed on City revisiting their interest further down the line.
On paper, that should have brought clarity. Instead, it has only sharpened the divide around him.
A fanbase split
The reaction against Real Sociedad laid that bare. Some supporters have lost patience, their frustration fuelled by the constant noise around his future and the feeling that his eyes have wandered from west London to Madrid.
Others are not ready to give up on him. They sang for him once he pulled on the armband, a small but symbolic show of backing for a player Chelsea invested heavily in and still see as central to their project.
The tension is not just about transfers. Fernández’s earlier hints about wanting Real Madrid have lingered. So have the flashpoints from his international career that jarred with parts of the English fanbase.
His celebration of Argentina’s goal against England in the World Cup semi-final did not go unnoticed, especially among Chelsea supporters already on edge about his future. His later red card in the final, which Argentina went on to lose to Spain, only added another dramatic chapter to a turbulent few months for the midfielder.
All of it feeds into the same question: is he fully committed to Chelsea, or just passing through?
Chelsea tune up, questions remain
On the pitch, Chelsea did their job. They wrapped up their pre-season with a 3–1 win over Real Sociedad, a result that should send them into the new campaign with a degree of confidence.
New signing Morgan Rogers opened the scoring, a neat statement on his first outing. João Pedro took over from there, adding two more to underline the attacking options at the club’s disposal.
Yet even in a comfortable win, the story refused to move away from Fernández. His cameo, the boos, the cheers, the armband – all of it felt like a preview of what awaits when competitive football returns.
Chelsea believe he will still be their player deep into the decade. Some fans are desperate for him to prove why. Others are already braced for the next twist in a saga that refuses to die.
