Erling Haaland's Future: What If Barcelona or Real Madrid Make a Move?

Dietmar Hamann told GOAL that there is "always a chance" Erling Haaland could leave Manchester City if Barcelona or Real Madrid express interest. Although no official approaches have come yet, and Haaland remains under contract until 2034, the possibility of a new chapter away from the Etihad Stadium remains.

Haaland’s Achievements So Far

Since joining City in 2022 following in his father Alf Inge’s footsteps, Haaland has become one of football’s most prolific strikers. His £51 million ($69m) transfer fee now looks like a bargain, considering his debut season ended with a Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League Treble, scoring 52 goals.

He has since broken numerous records, reaching 100 top-flight English goals at a historic pace and securing long-term personal terms with the club. Still, that doesn't guarantee he'll stay for the entire duration of his contract.

Spanish Giants’ Interest and Haaland’s Age

Rumors about interest from Spain persist. Haaland will turn 27 next summer, concluding his fifth year with Manchester City. Could this be the moment he seeks a fresh challenge at Camp Nou or Santiago Bernabeu?

Hamann said, "Well, he’s won it all, hasn’t he? He won the Champions League, he won the Premier League, and I’m not sure how long he’s got, he’s signed a very long contract, didn’t he? Obviously, it’s not down to him whether he will leave or can leave, but I think it’s just natural when you’ve won it all, when you’ve been at the club for a certain time. He’s even born in England, isn’t he, because his father played in the Premier League."

"I think there might be a time where he says, when Barcelona or Madrid come calling, yeah, I think there’s always a chance, but if City says no, with the contract he’s got, then it might be tricky because he won’t be cheap either."

Leadership at Manchester City After Departures

Currently, Haaland is focused on helping City pursue trophies under Enzo Maresca, Guardiola’s successor. With key veterans like Bernardo Silva, Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne, and Ilkay Gundogan having left, new leaders must emerge.

Hamann added, "It’s always a chance when very powerful and big characters in the dressing room leave, it’s always a chance for others to step up and obviously somebody has to take the mantle, because they’ve been hugely successful."

On transfer deadline day, City also secured Argentine World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for £125 million ($169m), making him the joint-most expensive British football signing. Fernandez, known for his combative style and leadership as a former captain at Stamford Bridge, will be crucial in midfield.

City currently leads the Premier League after starting the 2026-27 season with two wins. Their next match is at home against Frank Lampard’s Coventry team.
