Estevão's Race Against Time for World Cup Recovery
Estevão should be lighting up the build-up to a World Cup. Instead, Brazil’s teenage sensation is back where it all began, fighting a hamstring injury and the calendar in equal measure.
The 17-year-old has been out since April 18, when he pulled up during Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester United. One sharp sprint, one tear, and suddenly one of Brazil’s most exciting attacking weapons is in danger of missing the biggest stage of all.
Now, in a bid to fast-track his recovery, Estevão has returned to São Paulo to use Palmeiras’ facilities, according to ESPN. It is a familiar setting, a place where he went from prodigy to Premier League signing. This time, though, the mission is not to impress scouts or win titles. It is to get his leg right, and quickly.
Chelsea have not loosened their grip. The London club remain in full control of his medical programme and have dispatched a specialist member of their medical staff to Brazil to oversee every step. Every drill, every stretch, every test will follow Chelsea’s protocols, even as he works on home soil.
The timing could hardly be harsher. Under Carlo Ancelotti, Estevão has become a central figure in the Selecão’s attack, a teenager treated not as a prospect but as a weapon. Before the injury, his place in Brazil’s World Cup squad for the tournament in North America was seen as a formality. Ancelotti has repeatedly highlighted the winger’s impact since his debut; he was not just in the squad, he was in the plans.
Now the clock is merciless. Brazil open their World Cup campaign against Morocco on June 13. Between that date and the moment he limped off against United lies a shrinking window in which he must heal, train, and convince both club and country that his hamstring can withstand tournament football.
Group C
Brazil sit in Group C, alongside Morocco, Scotland and Haiti. For a nation chasing its first world title since 2002, every selection decision will be scrutinised. A half-fit teenager, even one this gifted, is a gamble.
Chelsea know exactly what they stand to lose as well. Since arriving from Palmeiras last summer, Estevão has delivered an eye-catching debut season in England. Eight goals in 36 appearances across all competitions have gone some way to justifying the heavy investment that saw Chelsea beat off a string of European rivals to sign him. In a side that has lurched between promise and inconsistency, he has often been the spark.
His absence has been obvious. Chelsea have laboured in recent weeks, short of incision in the final third and short of the fearless edge he brings. The club’s medical team is now working in tandem with Brazilian staff to protect his long-term future, even if that means sacrificing his short-term dream of a World Cup.
For Brazil, his rise has been as rapid as it has been ruthless in front of goal. Since his senior debut in September 2024, Estevão has scored five times in just 11 appearances. That kind of efficiency is exactly what Ancelotti wanted at his disposal for the group stage and beyond.
Instead, the conversation has shifted. In Brazil, the phrase is already out there: Estevão is “running against time to be at the World Cup.” The next few weeks at the Palmeiras Academy will decide whether this story becomes a tale of miraculous recovery or a brutal reminder of how fragile even the brightest trajectories can be.
