Ethan Williams Joins Peterborough United from Manchester United
Manchester United have quietly moved another young talent out of Old Trafford, with winger Ethan Williams completing a permanent switch to Peterborough United.
The deal continues a summer of trimming and reshaping behind the headline acts of United’s midfield rebuild and search for a new striker and left-back. While the focus has been on big names and big gaps in the first team, the club have been just as ruthless with those on the fringes of the academy pathway.
Another academy product moves on
United confirmed on their website that 20-year-old Williams has agreed a move to League One side Peterborough, subject to registration. It’s a clean break, not a loan, and another sign of the club’s determination to cash in when they feel a youngster is unlikely to make the senior grade at Old Trafford.
The fee is officially undisclosed, but talkSPORT’s chief transfer reporter Alex Crook revealed the numbers behind the move. Posting on X, Crook said the deal is worth “north of 750k” including performance-related add-ons, and branded it a “good signing for Posh.”
For a player yet to make a competitive first-team appearance for United, it’s a notable return – and a clear bet from Peterborough on his upside.
Peterborough’s statement of intent
Peterborough wasted no time framing the transfer as a coup. In their own announcement, the League One club described Williams as a “highly-rated Manchester United winger” and confirmed he has signed a long-term contract for what they called a “sizeable undisclosed fee.”
Crucially, he arrives ready-made for the season. Williams has just come off United’s pre-season tour, where he scored in a 5-0 win over Rosenborg, and completed the formalities at the Bespoke Builds Training Ground.
Posh boss Luke Williams underlined exactly why they moved for him.
“Ethan is a player that will give us another option in the wide areas, he is quick, direct and will be a threat and I am looking forward to working with him,” he said. “He has already got first team experience at a few clubs and joins us after being away with Manchester United on their pre-season tour, so he is fit and ready to go.”
A wide player with pace, direct running and recent exposure to United’s senior environment is a strong fit for a club with Peterborough’s track record of polishing and selling on young attacking talent.
United’s quiet clear-out
Williams’ exit slots into a broader pattern. United have been busy moving on players who sit just outside the first-team picture.
