Fatih Tekke walked into the press room carrying the weight of a club on his shoulders and left it having tried to resign.
The Trabzonspor head coach did not hide behind excuses after his side’s bruising European exit at the hands of Ferencvaros. He called the night “very sad” and pointed the finger squarely at himself and his staff.
“We had a very sad night, of course, and the reason is me and my team. It was a sad night for our country and our society,” Tekke said, visibly shaken by the scale of the setback.
For a while, it hadn’t looked like ending in crisis. “Until the moment the player was sent off, the match seemed to be going well,” he reflected. But the dismissal shifted everything. Trabzonspor collapsed out of Europa League contention and with it went 18 months of work, in Tekke’s eyes.
“For 18 months, day and night, my team and I have been thinking about how to deliver a better performance,” he said. Then came the bombshell. “As of now, I am submitting my resignation from my 18-month term, and I believe I have the right to punish myself in this way.”
It sounded final. It wasn’t.

Inside the club, Tekke’s words were seen not as a considered strategic decision but as an emotional reaction in the raw aftermath of a heavy defeat on the continental stage. The hierarchy moved quickly.
In a firm statement on their official website, Trabzonspor drew a line under the resignation talk.
“Our head coach, Fatih Tekke, decided to resign in the heat of the moment following the defeat against Ferencvaros. The Trabzonspor Board of Directors has rejected manager Fatih Tekke’s resignation. Fatih Tekke continues in his managerial duties and will take charge of the team for our upcoming league fixture against Amedspor.”
No search for a replacement. No interim coach. No drawn-out saga. Tekke stays.
Amedspor away becomes a test of character
That decision now piles the pressure onto the next 90 minutes. Trabzonspor must turn from European disappointment to domestic duty in a hurry, with a Turkish Super Lig trip to Amedspor looming on Monday, August 31.
They do not have the luxury of time. The international break is just around the corner, and going into that pause on the back of another poor result would only deepen the unrest around the club.
Tekke’s immediate job is clear: repair a damaged dressing room, restore belief, and drag the focus away from his own future and back onto the pitch. An emphatic response in the league has become more than a target. It feels like a necessity for a frustrated fanbase and a shaken squad.
The board has shown its hand by backing the coach. Now the question hangs over Trabzonspor: can Tekke turn that faith into a statement performance in Amed, or will this European wound keep bleeding into their season?
