FC Cincinnati Signs Tyrell Malacia on Free Transfer
FC Cincinnati have made one of the most eye-catching moves of the MLS summer, landing former Manchester United left-back Tyrell Malacia on a free transfer and handing their back line a serious upgrade.
The 27-year-old Netherlands international has chosen Ohio as the stage for the next chapter of his career, swapping Old Trafford and the European spotlight for a fresh start in Major League Soccer. Cincinnati confirmed the deal on Friday, announcing a contract that runs through June 2027, with a club option for the 2027-28 MLS season.
For a club already pushing to stay among the Eastern Conference elite, this is no cosmetic signing. It’s a defensive pillar.
Cincinnati clear the runway
To get Malacia through the door, Cincinnati’s front office had to get creative with the roster rules that govern MLS. The club secured an international roster slot from St. Louis CITY SC, sending $200,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money (GAM) the other way.
That kind of outlay for a slot, just to make room, underlines how heavily they are betting on Malacia. General Manager Chris Albright made no attempt to hide the club’s excitement, calling it the arrival of a player whose experience can anchor the group in the coming years.
The message is clear: this isn’t a luxury signing. It’s a piece to build around.
Leaving Old Trafford’s frustrations behind
Malacia arrives in Cincinnati with something to prove and plenty still in the tank.
He joined Manchester United from Feyenoord in 2022 and burst out of the blocks under Erik ten Hag, showing the aggression and energy that made him a standout in the Eredivisie. Then the injuries came. Again and again. Fitness issues repeatedly stalled his progress, disrupting any rhythm he tried to build.
Even so, he still managed 50 appearances for the 20-time English champions, featuring in both the Premier League and European competition. When he played, he faced some of the sharpest attacking talent in world football. That education doesn’t disappear.
Now, the “Orange and Blue” get the benefit. Malacia walks into their locker room with more than 250 professional games in Europe behind him, a seasoned full-back tested in high-pressure environments. Cincinnati fans have already had their first glimpse of him in club colours through a flurry of social media teasers, and the anticipation around his debut is building fast.
A CV lined with trophies
For all the setbacks in England, Malacia’s career comes decorated with silverware.
He was part of the Manchester United squad that ended the club’s trophy drought by lifting the 2022-23 EFL Cup, a landmark moment in the club’s recent history. More recently, he returned to the Netherlands on loan and contributed to PSV Eindhoven’s Eredivisie title win in the 2024-25 season, adding another major honour to his record.
On the international stage, his credentials are just as solid. Malacia has earned nine senior caps for the Netherlands and was selected for the Dutch squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where the Oranje reached the quarter-finals before a dramatic exit.
Now comes a different kind of test. A new league, a new continent, a club with serious ambitions.
Cincinnati have given Malacia the platform and the contract. The only question left is how high this partnership can push them in the MLS landscape.
