Federico Gatti's Uncertain Future at Juventus
Federico Gatti’s summer has dragged on like a transfer window that refuses to shut. No clarity, no guarantees, just a defender stuck between a club that can live without him and a market that hasn’t quite decided what to do with him.
Juventus have already turned down a late push from Porto, a move that came too close to the deadline for the UEFA Champions League squad lists. That cut-off has passed, even if some leagues still have their windows open. The timing matters: any club taking Gatti now knows he wouldn’t be involved in Europe for this season.
According to Alfredo Pedullà, Juventus didn’t slam the door on the idea of selling him. The problem lay in the numbers and the structure of the deal, not in the principle of letting him go. Inside the dressing room hierarchy, the message has been even clearer. With Jhon Lucumi arriving, Gatti has slid further down the pecking order. He knows it. The club knows it. And he’s open to leaving to play more.
The options are narrowing, but not gone. There are still markets where the clock is ticking a little slower. A move outside Europe remains on the table, with Gatti ready to consider a switch to the UAE if it means regular football and a defined role instead of waiting for scraps in Turin.
One route, though, has effectively closed. Al-Sadd, long in the hunt for a high-profile Italian center-back, have finally got their man – just not the one from Juventus. After a year of trying, they’ve reached an agreement with Lazio and Alessio Romagnoli. The defender has already flown in for his medicals, sealing a deal that Al-Sadd had been working on in the background for months.
Lazio, for their part, were ready. They had moved early to refresh their backline, bringing in Danilho Doekhi and Josip Sutalo to cover the departures of Romagnoli and Mario Gila. That planning leaves Gatti out of that particular picture, with Al-Sadd’s defensive rebuild now complete.
Current Situation
So where does that leave Juventus and Gatti?
From a purely technical standpoint, he isn’t at the level of the club’s top defensive contributors. But there’s an argument he has been undervalued. Juventus have to think about Gleison Bremer’s workload and injury history. They can’t afford to mismanage their only true defensive depth and then be surprised when the calendar tightens and the fixtures pile up.
They also have more flexibility than in previous seasons. With a stronger fullback option in Zeki Celik, they can lean on Pierre Kalulu as a center-back more often if needed. That versatility gives them room to maneuver, but it also raises the bar for any offer. If Juventus are to lose a defender now, without the possibility of bringing in a replacement, the proposal has to be compelling – financially and strategically.
Gatti waits, the market stretches, and Juventus walk a fine line: cashing in on a squad player, or keeping one more body for the battles still to come.
