Ferran Torres Skips Barcelona Training for PSG Move
Spain’s World Cup match-winner Ferran Torres has been granted permission to miss Barcelona training as he closes in on a move to Paris St-Germain worth in excess of £40m.
The 26-year-old, who struck the extra-time winner against Argentina to deliver Spain a second World Cup crown this summer, was scheduled to report back to Barca on Wednesday. Instead, with negotiations advancing, he will stay away from the training ground as the transfer edges towards completion.
A World Cup hero on the move
Torres returns from the summer as one of the faces of Spain’s triumph, his decisive goal against Argentina instantly etched into the national team’s modern history. That status has not stopped his club future from accelerating in another direction.
With only a year left on his Barcelona contract, the forward has been at the centre of growing speculation and a degree of irritation among some supporters, who have bristled at how openly he has discussed a possible exit.
On a media tour in the United States after lifting the World Cup, Torres kept the door wide open.
“I have a contract with Barcelona but, in football, you never know,” he said.
Pressed on PSG’s interest, he did not hide the attraction.
“Every time these teams want you it's a good thing,” he added. “You never know because in football everything can change in one minute, so I have to be ready for everything.”
PSG’s next statement signing
PSG, preparing to face Aston Villa in the Super Cup final in Salzburg on Wednesday night, look set to make Torres their latest high-profile addition. The French champions have claimed the Champions League in each of the past two seasons and remain intent on refreshing an attack that could lose Bradley Barcola, who is wanted by Liverpool.
Luis Enrique, the former Barcelona coach and player now in charge in Paris, knows the Camp Nou landscape as well as anyone. A move for Torres would reunite the forward with a familiar figure and drop a proven international finisher into a side already built to dominate Europe.
For Barcelona, the fee north of £40m for a player entering the final year of his deal offers financial logic, even if it strips away a World Cup-winning forward at a time when the squad is still being reshaped.
