FIFA President Gianni Infantino Hints at Expanding World Cup to 64 Teams

The 2026 FIFA World Cup showcased the largest lineup ever, increasing the number of teams from 32 to 48. Yet, there might be more growth ahead. In a recent interview, FIFA President Gianni Infantino indicated that FIFA will explore expanding the tournament even further after this edition wraps up next week.

Speaking with Swiss channel Blue Sport, Infantino was asked about possibly moving to a 64-team World Cup following the jump from 32 to 48 teams. He didn't dismiss the idea. "This matter will definitely be examined and debated by the relevant committees once this World Cup concludes," he told ESPN. "A World Cup should represent the entire world, not just Europe and South America. Every country deserves a chance to aspire to participate."

Infantino also pointed out that the quality of teams worldwide is improving constantly. "If smaller nations don’t get opportunities to compete in the World Cup, their motivation to develop diminishes," he said.

Earlier Calls for 64 Teams

Back in March 2025, CONMEBOL, the South American football confederation, suggested increasing the number of teams to 64 for the 2030 World Cup, marking the tournament’s 100th anniversary. Its president, Alejandro Domínguez, expressed a vision for a historic event, emphasizing unity and global celebration: "When football belongs to everyone, the joy is truly worldwide."

What Would a 64-Team Tournament Look Like?

Approving the expansion to 64 teams would nearly double the matches compared to the traditional 32-team format held between 1998 and 2022. The older setup had 64 matches, while the upcoming 48-team format features 104 games. A 64-team World Cup would host 128 matches.

This increase in teams could simplify progression to the knockout rounds. Currently, eight third-place teams advance from the group stage through complicated tiebreakers. With 64 teams, only the top two in each group would move forward, eliminating the need for third-place qualifiers.
