Galatasaray Pursues Fifth Straight Title as Rivals Strengthen for Super Lig

The Turkish Super Lig roars back to life on Friday night, and the storyline at the top is brutally simple: can anyone stop Galatasaray?

Okan Buruk’s side open the 2026-27 campaign at Rams Park against newly promoted Corum FK at 9.30 pm local time (1830GMT), carrying the weight of a potential dynasty. They have already strung together four straight titles, 26 in total. A fifth in a row would push their domestic dominance into uncharted territory.

Everyone else has spent the summer trying to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Galatasaray still the team to beat

The champions come in as the standard-setters, their fourth consecutive crown sealed in May after another relentless season. Buruk has built a machine that knows how to manage pressure, grind out results and accelerate when the finish line appears.

They also know they are the target. Every transfer move from Istanbul to the Black Sea has been made with Galatasaray in mind.

Corum FK, making the jump into the top flight, could hardly have asked for a tougher introduction. Rams Park, on opening night, against a side chasing history. It’s a baptism by fire.

Fenerbahce go all in

Fenerbahce finished runners-up last season. That wasn’t enough, and their response has been emphatic.

The Istanbul giants have thrown their weight behind a title push, headlined by the arrival of Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku from Napoli this week. A proven goalscorer, a statement signing. Around him, the club have added English winger Mason Greenwood from Olympique Marseille and Netherlands defender Nathan Ake from Manchester City, strengthening both flanks and the back line.

The message is clear: the 2014 league title is the last one they want to talk about. The drought has dragged on for more than a decade. They start their latest attempt to end it away to Genclerbirligi in Ankara on Saturday night.

That fixture suddenly carries a different edge. With Lukaku leading the line and new faces all over the pitch, Fenerbahce will be judged from week one.

Besiktas reload up front

Across the city, Besiktas have chosen firepower as their answer.

The Black Eagles have moved decisively to sharpen their attack, bringing in Serbia international Dusan Vlahovic from Juventus and Belgian winger Leandro Trossard from Arsenal. Goals, movement, variety – on paper, it’s the kind of upgrade that can turn tight draws into wins.

Besiktas open at home on Sunday against Eyupspor, another promoted side stepping into the glare of the top division. For the hosts, it’s a chance to showcase a new-look frontline in front of their own fans and send an early signal that they intend to be part of the title conversation, not just the supporting cast.

Salah shakes up the Black Sea

The most eye-catching move of the summer, though, came away from Istanbul.

Trabzonspor, eager to disrupt the capital’s grip on the trophy, have landed Egypt captain Mohamed Salah on a two-year deal. A player of global profile, a serial winner, now dropped into a league already bristling with attacking talent.

His arrival shifts the mood around Trabzonspor. They travel to Kasimpasa on Saturday at 7 pm (1600GMT), and every touch from Salah will be scrutinized. Can he tilt the balance of power away from the Istanbul giants, or at least drag Trabzonspor into the heart of the title fight?

That question hangs over the season as much as Galatasaray’s pursuit of five in a row.

New faces, old ambitions

Eighteen clubs line up for the 69th edition of Türkiye’s top flight. Among them, three promoted sides: Erzurumspor, Amedspor and Corum FK.

Amedspor, listed as Amed SF, will taste Super Lig football for the first time, starting with a Sunday night clash against Erzurumspor FK at 9.30 pm (1830GMT). Erzurumspor return after a five-year absence, eager to prove they belong back at this level. Corum FK, meanwhile, get the glamour – and the grind – of opening the entire season away to the champions.

The schedule stretches through to May 2027, with storylines already stacked up before a ball is kicked.
