Gavi Believes Paredes Should Not Face Suspension After World Cup Final Incident
Spain midfielder Gavi expressed that he does not think Argentina's Leandro Paredes deserves a suspension for his involvement in the altercation following the World Cup 2026 final.
The tense moments unfolded after Spain secured a 1-0 victory, with players from both teams clashing on the pitch. Alongside Paredes, Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala were also seen taking part in the confrontation.
Paredes appeared to push Spain’s Eric Garcia by the throat, prompting substitute Gavi to step in. However, Almada pushed Gavi to the ground, and Paredes then shoved the Barcelona midfielder by placing his hand in his face.
FIFA has assigned a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to review the incident. Those involved may face suspensions, and the Argentine Football Association might be fined as a result.
Gavi told El Partidazo de COPE, “I don’t think [Paredes] should be suspended. I understand it’s not the best image for kids, but there is also a physical, aggressive side to football. The most logical thing would have been to send him off during the match. In the end, it’s all part of football.”
Ayala Addresses His Actions During the Fracas
Roberto Ayala said he plans to apologize to Spain’s Dani Olmo after what was perceived as striking Olmo’s face. Ayala described it more as a push than a punch.
He told Capital Radio in Valencia, “When the match ended, I saw a scuffle in the middle of the pitch and went over to stop it from escalating because that’s not who we are. I take responsibility for what I did. My intention was simply to separate them.”
Clarifications on Referee Decisions and FIFA Action
There was confusion when FIFA's commentator information system mistakenly showed that Paredes had been sent off by referee Slavko Vincic for pushing Garcia. That red card was later removed from the records, and FIFA confirmed to BBC Sport no disciplinary action was taken at the time.
Enzo Fernandez from Argentina did receive a red card in the final due to a second yellow in added time of the second half.
