Gavin Bazunu Joins Bolton Wanderers to Revive Career

Gavin Bazunu has drawn a line under his Southampton spell and dropped back into the Championship with Bolton Wanderers, signing a three-year deal that he hopes will relaunch both his club and international career.

The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper, still only 24, swaps St Mary’s for the Toughsheet Community Stadium after slipping down the pecking order on the south coast. He featured 19 times in the Championship last season, but by the end of the campaign he was no longer the first name on the teamsheet.

His trajectory at Southampton never quite settled. Signed from Manchester City in 2022 as a long-term No 1, Bazunu’s early promise gave way to a stop-start period of loans and injury. The second half of the 2025-26 season was spent at Stoke City, a spell disrupted by fitness problems. Before that, he had been sent to Standard Liege in Belgium’s top flight in search of rhythm and confidence.

Now comes a reset.

Bazunu arrives at Bolton for an undisclosed fee, and this move is about minutes, not just badges. With 22 senior caps for Ireland already, he knows his national-team status depends on playing regularly.

"It's obviously a club with massive history. I see it as a place where I can come and progress my personal career, while helping the team with their ambitions of getting back to where they belong," he told Wanderers TV, setting out his intent as clearly as any clean sheet.

He did not hide the central motive either: he wants the gloves every week.

"I want to get back to being in a position where I’m playing week in, week out and enjoying my football again. My big aim and ambition here is to play as many games as I can and show my levels.

"I’m excited to be here and excited for what’s to come. I’m sure all the other new signings will have said the same thing, but we’re excited to get going, show our qualities and show where this team belongs."

For Ireland, the move will be watched closely. Bazunu’s last cap came in March 2024 in a friendly against Switzerland, and his most recent call-up under Heimir Hallgrimsson was in November of that year. A strong run as Bolton’s No 1 would push him straight back into that conversation.

Bolton gain a goalkeeper with European experience, Premier League exposure and a point to prove. Bazunu gains what he craves most: a stage, a season, and the chance to show he should never have left the spotlight.
